The sounds of metalworking were in the air recently at the Gulf Branch
Nature Center forge.

That in and of itself is not a surprise: The facility is a frequent
haunt of members of the Blacksmiths Guild of the Potomac, who share
their craft with the public throughout the year. They aim to preserve
and interpret American traditions in worked steel and other metals,
and support both beginners and experienced smiths while creating
fellowship among artists.

But a recent event added an international flair, with the appearance
of noted Ukraine metalworker Anatoliy Rudick. Rudick was joined by
Eric Zieg, a craftsman from Mount Vernon, in showcasing classic skills
under the watchful eye of others interested in working metal.
