I took a couple classes in Spanish in high school because it seemed
much more practical since I lived 50 mile north of the US border with
Mexico.

Yeah, our kids should learn both Spanish and Mandarin in schools. One
or the other will likely be the default language of the North American
Union which will be in effect by that time. sigh
