Only motorsailers under power and sailboats with furled sails will be upright. Otherwise the wind pressure against the sails cause the mast(s) to lever the boat towards the downwind side. [ ... ] Most sailboats have a design heel angle. It is usually pretty shallow, at 10-20 degrees. At that angle the waterline is at its most advantageous (typically at it's longest), The "Wianno Sr.", which my father used to have was rather broad, and significantly benefited (in a race) from enough wind to heel over to about 45 to 55 degrees. Our best win was when a gale hit during the race, and we had a brand-new suit of dacron sails. the keel is still able to do a good job of holding lateral movement, Not much keel on this one -- she was a centerboard gaff rigged sloop. and (probably most importantly) the sails are where they are gong to do the most good... in the air catching wind. The gaff rig put a lot more sail up there where it could still catch a lot of wind. :-) But I would never put a machine shop on board such a craft. Just keeping everything from rusting would be a never-ending battle. :-) Enjoy, DoN. -- Email: | Voice (all times): (703) 938-4564 (too) near Washington D.C. | http://www.d-and-d.com/dnichols/DoN.html --- Black Holes are where God is dividing by zero --- |
