If you just access text newsgroups you can probably get along with
http://news.aioe.org/ for free or http://www.teranews.com/ for a one-time $3.95
setup fee. AT&T still provides access to a good news server, but I keep
wondering when that shoe will drop. Since I continue my account there mostly
for the newsgroup access, it will be their loss if it happens.

That explains why things went strange a little while ago. I don't
recall any notice from Comcast.

So, I'm in the market for a newsgroup service. Comcast used Giganews,
which worked well except when Comcast screwed it up somehow. Going
direct eliminates one layer of trouble.

What else do people use and like, or hate, and why?

It seems to be coming on more and more.
News groups are turned into political crap on each other sites and stealing
music, movies, smut and the like.

It is a real shame that some people feel so much shame or hurt that they
must strike out and slander each other and anyone in the political scene.

This is a metal group. How much metal working is done here ? NOT MUCH ANYMORE.

IT IS A REAL SHAME. I'm glad I have printed a number of statements and facts
here while the group was at the focus of metal working.

I Cez the enemy - they is us. Pogo.

Newsguy is offering a free month of service to Comcast customers. See

http://newsguy.com/freemonth.htm

I've used Newsguy for several years. Long retention, very reliable.
Their "Basic" account allows 10 GB per month for $39.95 annually
($8.95/month if you pay monthly) and includes an email account. Unused
capacity carries forward indefinitely with no cap.

I use newsguy (check out http://www.newsguy.com for
information). They offer both web access and NNTP access, along with
their own custom newsreaders for Windows systems (which I have never
tried because I connect from my unix systems).

If you follow newsguy.announce and newsguy.general, you will get
advance notice of things which might impact your newsreading, such as a
recent move to new servers in Virginia, and you will get to know the
people behind the company.

They are in the practice of offering a free month of access to
those who have been disenfranchised by ISP's dropping news service.

There are others -- but this is the one which I picked when my
previous ISP dropped newsfeeds (including to my personal news servers,
and a couple of weeks later, killed their own news server as well.

FWIW -- if you mention the name of who recommended them to you,
they will get some credit to their own account. Don't feel that you
have to for me -- but it would be nice. :-)

Good Luck,
DoN.

So far, the contenders are Giganews (the implicit incumbent) and Newsguy.

Time for some research.

As of 6/30/08, Verizon offers only comp.*, humanities.*, misc.*,
news.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*., and talk.*.

When I bought Forte Agent, it included 3 months of service from APN.
Aside from it not being included with COmcast service, I thought was
better than Giganews. http://www.forteinc.com I'm not affiliated.

I second the panix. They run a good show which is well worth the $100.
Ripco.com would pretty much be their equivalent in Chicago. Both are
smaller ISPs that go back forever and aren't retarded like the large value
subtracted companies.

A lot depends on what's important. Price is more important than binaries.
I tried Teranews, but I didn't like the tagline and the service.

So I went to glorb for $10 a year. No problems.

It doesn't appear in the reviews, but usenetmonster seems to be a good
choice. Rollover GB ensures I'll never hit any limits.

Google Groups has no filters but otherwise it works fine on a slow
dialup connection. You could use it for a backup until you find
another paid news reader with filters.

Actually the spam and agitprop is so childishly obvious that it
doesn't seriously interfere with finding on-topic postings except when
the spammers completely flood the group. I have a large monitor at
high resolution and can usually see all unread posts on a single page.
It's like scanning a newspaper.

FWIW, Newsguy will put a default tagline (.sig) in -- if you
don't define your own .sig which prevents them from adding their own.
That may also be the case with Teranews.

How you do it is newsreader specific. In unix systems, it is
usually taken from a file named ".signature" in the user's home
directory. MS-DOS does not like files with a dot anywhere other than
between the 8-character filename body and the three-character filename
extension. Windows tends to be a bit more forgiving there, but I still
don't know whether they can accept a file whose name starts with '.'.

Good Luck,
DoN.

Same with Newsguy. I'm up to over 1 Terabyte of unused

Windows NT4 can make a file like that from the dot-prompt
(made a file called "..txt"). File Explorer wouldn't let me
use that name though. It sees the file just fine and you can
work with it, just can't create or rename it as such.

I do have "Posix" compatibility enabled, that may have
something to do with it. I can create symlinks to files too,
which can be handy at times (and confusing without some

Hmm ... is there no form of directory listing which will show a

symlink points.

Sure, but they have been ported to Windows from the *nixes
:)

I sure didn't make the symlinks using an MS program. Most
likely the same programs you use, or very similar. Ls and Ln
come to mind. I don't use them all that often and always
have to check their usage and my notes first. Yup, Ls for
displaying stuff like that and Ln to create the symlinks.
