Hi!

I made 3 hand scraping related videos:

Nick,

Excellent resources you've posted.

I've done this work extensively with a die grinder to flatten the
bottom of large inserted die blocks. It's neat to see the finer work
accomplished with a scraping blade.

I guess it should be noted that those without access to a surface
grinder to can use a die grinder (or even a disc grinder) for heavy
material removal before they switch to a scraping blade, if the
surface is severely warped.

There's a certain amount of technique required to get solid results
while doing this type of work. I found the biggest issue is to make
sure that the middle of the block is not "higher" than the outer
edges. This will cause the block to rock when rubbing on the surface
plate, resulting in a false reading with the blue (the whole surface
will look good with the blue, but it's actually a convex dish shape).

I tend to clear the middle of the block pretty much completely when
starting out to make absolutely certain this false reading doesn't
happen. Once the outer perimeter comes in flat, I bring it down
uniformly, making sure to remove any readings in the middle section.
Eventually, the whole middle comes in and you're there.

Regards,

Robin

Not *that* difficult. Put work on the plate, try to rock it. If you *hear*
that it rocks, you know you're off a lot. If you don't hear it rock, put a
dial indicator onto two corners and try to rock it. If the dial moves, you
know that you have to pay attention. That is done by rough scraping in the
middle and observing the pattern you get when touching.

Its always important to observe how the high spots move. If they move or pop
up here and there, there's something wrong.

BTW:
The bed insert had to be redone, because the mating surface in the gap was
all except flat. I scraped the bed's gap flat (had to scrape a surface
plate for that), but then the insert was too low (I knew that before).
Measured what extra material I needed (0.1mm) milled pockets into the
bridge, filled them with multimetall and put it onto the granite plate with
0.1mm shims. So I didn't have to scrap that much. Multimetall is easy to
scrape.

Also did all the guides in Moglice. *GREAT* material!
I'm not completely through with the lathe, because I'm in the middle of
redoing the seats for the spindle bearings. They are non-axial. All on a
brandnew lathe. Chinese crap! My last tool I have bought from those liars
and idiots! http://www.yangzhoumachine.com

Damn, that was nice of you to do.
