It may have been. I got it from my sophomore-year high school English
teacher, who got it from an essay by one of his students, who didn't know
****. My English teacher awarded it for any sentence over 50 words long. He
would draw a big cartridge on your paper, in red, and it was sitting
base-down on a trophy base.

When I was a young editor at _American Machinist_ I kept a folder labelled
Bullet Surprise Winners, of press releases that were real stinkers. My
favorite came from Burston-Marstellar, one of the biggest and most acclaimed
PR companies in the business. The headline read "Cold-headed Stud Saves Long
Island Potato Farmers." I pictured somebody like Vin Diesel defending the
fields from groundhogs or something. But that wasn't it. It was some kind of
fastener that did something unremarkable. It was a metalworking magazine,
after all.

Yep it's about a farmer who raised chickens. He decided to put bell onto
each rooster to keep track of which ones were mating and which were not.
The bells all had different tones so he could tell which bird was doing
his job the best. BUT his favorite birds bell didn't make a sound all
day. So he went to check on him. To his amazement the bird had grabbed
the bell in his beak to silence it, while all the other roosters ran
around with bells ringing and chasing the hens. His charts showed that
this rooster being smarter and better than the rest deserved acknowledgment,
So he gave him the NO-BELL-Piece Prize, and the Pullet Surprise...


And it is MUCH funnier when told out loud...
