There's a hit-n-miss engine without the crank or flywheels in the
background. The one in the foreground looks like some kind of pump.
At least it looks like it has a packing gland.

Pete Keillor

It was designed to hang from the end opposite the "packing gland", yet
the writing on the gearbox casting woud be upside down if hung.
Mors****

Almost looks like some sort of air or steam powered drill unit.
Percussion perhaps

Note the operations lever on the other end. Looks like a valve handle.

"Pax Americana is a philosophy. Hardly an empire.
Making sure other people play nice and dont kill each other (and us)
off in job lots is hardly empire building, particularly when you give
them self determination under "play nice" rules.

Think of it as having your older brother knock the **** out of you
for torturing the cat." Gunner

It's a plasma manifold from X-19 alien space ship...be careful of the attached
anal probe!

as pete pointed out, the thing in the foreground is a pump, the thing in the
background is part of an engine - probably about 1 hp, maybe less

It looks like it might be a condensate pump or feedwater pump for a steam
engine.

Looks like a water hammer pump or Hydraulic Ram that were used on some
farms to pump irrigation water.

If it is a ram - it figures. Hills and river driving downward - hits hammer
and the water is pumped up-hill. Logical for the area.
