I had to walk through CS as part of the Russian military "sensitivity
training". (other elements of that training were jumping through fire
and all that stuff, it was fun)

It is a very unpleasant gas, much worse than fumes from sulphur based
cutting oil, but it is not deadly, just unpleasant.

Maybe the US military is planning to use it to cover its retreat from
Iraq.
