better than... nothing? :-)

I dunno... I had a floor jack, one caster of which had been frozen for
years -- through several attempts to get it free. PB-Blaster finally did
the trick that the others couldn't.

Kroil is IMO the best. Liquid Wrench has also worked for me in the past, but it
just doesn't work as well. It can, however, be purchased at your local hardware
store on a Sunday at 10PM, and Kroil is available only online or through
industrial vendors, typically 7-4 M-F or via mail order.

Never tried PB Blaster, almost certainly better than LW, might work better than
Kroil on some things. If I saw some somewhere I'd pick some up. Normally when I
use penetrating oil I'm in some sort of difficult situation and I'd try nearly
anything. But be aware, penetrating oil alone rarely is the complete solution.
Almost always, I use heat in conjunction with penetrating oil, often with
repeated heat/cool cycles that can last up to 2 weeks. Patience is key. Another
key is you MUST use the best possible tool to address the stuck item. Is it a
hex head bolt? Use a quality 6-sided box wrench or socket. Is it a slotted
screw? Use a US-made (or German made, just not an el cheapie) impact driver with
the tip that fits the slot tightly. Same for Phillips except use the largest
impact Phillips bit that will fit tightly. Broken off stud? Use real Vise Grips,
clamped as tightly as you can get them, as solidly as you can. Remember, you may
only get one chance at removing the item, so don't monkey around with cheap pliers.

While I use Kroil, I will say this: The preference for which type of
penetrating oil is highly subjective. Ask anyone who recently freed a
stubborn nut or bolt or screw which type is best and he will say, "it was
that XYZ brand I used; stuff is the absolute best there is; why, you could
unstick atoms in molecules with it; fact is there is adanger of that
happenin' so the damned Guvament is trying to control it" etc, ad nauseum.

The smell alone is enough to align the public. I've had Kroil work on stuff
after PB failed.

Maybe the PB just softened it up.

More than once I have sent a gullible student to the Aircraft shop

I've never had a lid I couldn't get off. But once, I had to break out
the 17" Channel Locks on a pickle jar. I used to amuse customers with
those pliers when doing a lube job on their cars (eons ago, back when
I first got started in the automotive industry in my previous life,
hence the strong hands.)

I'd get said pliers out of my tool box and walk toward their car with
them while their eyes bulged out of their sockets. They have a 7" jaw
opening and I slid 'em down to fit and unscrew the oil filter. g

My radiator hose screwdriver is 30" long, too. More eyeball poppin'.

Nope. More like, I tried that there kroil, and heat, and more kroil, and
this, and that, and the other frigging thing, and finally I was able to
remove the whole assembly from points away from where I wanted to open
it up, put 3 foot extenders on the wrenches, and _then_ I could get the
damn thing to move. And I used anti-seize when I put it back together.
Problem is those parts you can't ever get a 3 foot extender on the
wrench for, or you do and the parts shear instead of unscrewing.

And then I have this other item with an accessibility problem which has
had both Kroil and PB Blaster applied liberally, along with heat and
cold and time and hammers, and is still together as of the last battle I
had with it.

I use kroil, but I'm not at all convinced it's magic.

I have em all in the shop but when I have a stuck bolt I usually grab the
Kroil first...but then if the others were in a bright orange can so I could
find em I might try them more often LOL I like to hit the bolt with
freeze mist along with the Kroil. Seems to work better to cool the small
bit than to heat up everything. If the thermal shock is not enough then a
few good smaks with a hammer usually gets the kroil down to do it's thing.
Patienc is the key no matter what you use.
Glenn

I just had a shipment from Kano labs yesterday. I bought Silikroil in
cans, 1 gallon of liquid Kroil and 2 hand oilers. I also like their
Memogenda, they make great products. Sometimes nothing works, Kroil has
been a favorite of mine since being introduced to it at work, many
years ago. Take Care

I don't use any of the typical loosening penetrating oils. I have had
nothing but sucess usiing the dye penetrant spray typically sold at
welding supply stores for checking for cracks and cold welds..... Used
it on highly rusted stuff to items that were in a slat environment,
and lots of other problematic frozen things and its never failed me.

Kroil brand penetrating oil is
better than PB Blaster brand?

Yep. Kroil EATS rust. About 30 years ago to try it I put several
REALLY rusty nails in about 1/2" of Kroil. In the morning the rust had
FALLEN off. At a large truck repair shop, where I sometimes find
myself, they call it "Thank you Jesus". Try it, you'll like it.

Used to fight with jar lids, too, until my SO found this plastic
thingy that kinda looks like a WIDE can opener. Just hook the hook
under the rim of the lid, lift it up and it releases the vacuum in the
jar. The lid then simply twists off - my 6 year old grandson just
opened a jar of pickles with it the other day - he was so smug...
