Default FA - Starrett 696 and 696B Crank Shaft Distortion Dial Gauge

this is a pretty interesting specialty gauge - could be of interest to some
of the NG - it's very cool I must say

This tends to be a common check that is done on marine diesels and large
stationary engines as a preventative maintenance exercise. It shows how well
the main bearings are aligned. The bearings in large engines can be aligned
individually unlike smaller engines which a line bored and stay aligned for
the life of the engine.

for those of you who know how this is REALLY used, I'm curious - is is
measuring bending of the crankshaft, or what? how do you set it up (the
stuff on the web is less than clear), and what are you really measuring?
