Interesting, I love seeing stats like this. Thank you!

What is really interesting is that of the 25 top threads, only one is
about home repair- and it is #25!

Maybe nobody fixes anything anymore. ;-)

The reality is usenet is dying. I am watching about 10 text groups and
in all of them there are really only about 30-40 people, total,
posting. Only a couple are politics free and they are very much
special interest groups.

The binary groups are virtually dead.

I've been on Usenet since 1984 and I think I heard my first "Usenet is

actually is dying, but it's been the slowest possible death. I reckon
they'll be saying the same 20 years from now.

Dead in what way? Lack of idle banter, chatter, and politics? Yes, I should
hope so. But certainly not dead WRT binary posts. Binary volume is at
record highs and still growing, year after year.

Idiot.
Since _before_ you went on your crusade you have had zero
reason to post any criticism of my posts here.

Oh, a list of names, I think I'll insult them all.
Jerk.

Now you've made me make an off topic post.
Do you ever get tired of being an A-hole.

Most of us would very much like to but there is little call for it.
Yes, there are a few that post nonsense and are in my kill file and even
myself got probably too heavy with politics. If people post on-topic
stuff they get plenty of good replies.

I used to participate in a handful of groups from the pre-Facebook days
but most have zero participation in the past few years. Other groups
still have a smattering of on topic but are largely the same group
tossing about some usually friendly banter with no complaints.

There are over 100,000 groups. If you know what you're doing, you don't
have to check them one by one.

According to these guys, daily Usenet volume is running around 120GB, about
double what it was in 2019 and 10 times what it was a decade ago. Booming
doesn't begin to describe it.

Interesting, I love seeing stats like this. Thank you!

What is really interesting is that of the 25 top threads, only one is
about home repair- and it is #25!

Maybe nobody fixes anything anymore. ;-)

The reality is usenet is dying.

I've been on Usenet since 1984 and I think I heard my first "Usenet is
dying" somewhere around 1988 and continuing ever since. I suppose it
actually is dying, but it's been the slowest possible death. I reckon
they'll be saying the same 20 years from now.

I only have to point to this group. If it wasn't for a couple dozen
people talking about off topic stuff, there wouldn't be much activity
at all.

In spite of all Arlen bitches about, the actual home repair threads
stay pretty clean here and we do tend to leave our political
differences behind.

I am watching about 10 text groups and
in all of them there are really only about 30-40 people, total,
posting. Only a couple are politics free and they are very much
special interest groups.

The binary groups are virtually dead.

Dead in what way? Lack of idle banter, chatter, and politics? Yes, I should
hope so. But certainly not dead WRT binary posts. Binary volume is at
record highs and still growing, year after year.

Dead in the sense that there always used to be tens of thousands of
new headers in the alt.binaries.sounds. ... mp3 groups every week and
now there are only a handful. Some of the other groups collect nothing
at all.

OK, thanks. Looks like both of your claims fizzled out.

How is that?
which binary groups are booming?
For that matter, except for the political posts in the appropriate or
even inappropriate groups, which text groups are booming?

There are over 100,000 groups. If you know what you're doing, you don't
have to check them one by one.

According to these guys, daily Usenet volume is running around 120GB, about
double what it was in 2019 and 10 times what it was a decade ago. Booming

https://newsgroupdirect.com/blog/202...-feed-in-2020/

OK if you say so. It just isn't any of the groups I visit and it looks
like you either.

If you actually read the article it isn't as rosy as you imply.

"One potential explanation for the growth of the USENET feed is
reposting. Older articles are increasingly being reposted, which
pushes more of the total USENET feed into the more recent days.

Its estimated that only 10% of articles posted are ever actually read
and more than 50% of the articles read are less than 120 days old and
a whopping 85% of the read articles are less than 1500 days old.
Combine that with reposting and the growth of the USENET feed makes
more sense. Older articles are just not pulled as often."

It looks like a lot of "write only storage".

Never would have guessed. OTOH, they don't give details as to what the
traffic is. Seems most discussion groups have wanted but there may be
some streaming of movies that take up a lot of those bytes.

Less trimming of previous articles also has an effect on that 120GB.

Yes, and many binaries are sent in chunks distributed across many
individual articles to be stitched back together by the client. One
picture can be worth more than a thousand words.

Idiot.
Since _before_ you went on your crusade you have had zero
reason to post any criticism of my posts here.

Oh, a list of names, I think I'll insult them all.
Jerk.

Now you've made me make an off topic post.
Do you ever get tired of being an A-hole.

No, he's a hypocritical dumbass who has trolled several groups with off
topic posts, yet has the audacity to call others a troll. Of all
participants, Arlen is the biggest jackass of them all, next to Peeler,
of course. That is why most, if not all, have him in their killfile.

I first put the leading space version of him in my bozo bin.
Then he came back with the embedded double space version
and I thought his fruitless campaign to stop off topic posts would be
amusing. Then out of nowhere he insults me again.

So, now he has 2 places in the bozo bin.

A thoroughly nasty person.

Interesting, I love seeing stats like this. Thank you!

What is really interesting is that of the 25 top threads, only one
is
about home repair- and it is #25!

Maybe nobody fixes anything anymore. ;-)

The reality is usenet is dying.

I've been on Usenet since 1984 and I think I heard my first "Usenet
is
dying" somewhere around 1988 and continuing ever since. I suppose it
actually is dying, but it's been the slowest possible death. I
reckon
they'll be saying the same 20 years from now.

Yes, I
should
hope so. But certainly not dead WRT binary posts. Binary volume is
at
record highs and still growing, year after year.

Dead in the sense that there always used to be tens of thousands of
new headers in the alt.binaries.sounds. ... mp3 groups every week and
now there are only a handful. Some of the other groups collect
nothing
at all.

According to these guys, daily Usenet volume is running around 120GB,
about
double what it was in 2019 and 10 times what it was a decade ago.
Booming
doesn't begin to describe it.

https://newsgroupdirect.com/blog/202...-feed-in-2020/

Never would have guessed. OTOH, they don't give details as to what the
traffic is. Seems most discussion groups have wanted but there may be
some streaming of movies that take up a lot of those bytes.

Yes, and many binaries are sent in chunks distributed across many
individual articles to be stitched back together by the client.

One picture can be worth more than a thousand words.

Yes, but it makes no sense to do pictures that way,
you should use a link to one of the picture servers.

OK if you say so. It just isn't any of the groups I visit and it looks
like you either.

I'm capable of getting an overview of any group, set of groups, or all of
Usenet at any time, so I can see where traffic is heavy. I can look inside
a group without subscribing to it and without downloading headers. OTOH, if
I do want to get headers, I have the server send them compressed, which is
way way faster.

If you actually read the article it isn't as rosy as you imply.

"One potential explanation for the growth of the USENET feed is
reposting. Older articles are increasingly being reposted, which
pushes more of the total USENET feed into the more recent days.

It’s estimated that only 10% of articles posted are ever actually read
and more than 50% of the articles read are less than 120 days old and
a whopping 85% of the read articles are less than 1500 days old.
Combine that with reposting and the growth of the USENET feed makes
more sense. Older articles are just not pulled as often."

It looks like a lot of "write only storage".

I don't disagree with what they said in their blog, but I don't know how it
relates to your 'rosy' comment.

You claimed that binary groups are virtually dead, but the exact opposite
is true. Binary groups are exploding, seeing exponential growth over the
past 20 years. Text groups are slowing down, as people find other ways to
congregate and communicate, but binary traffic is anything but dead.

Indeed, and people like (and sometimes abuse) the freedom (through
anonymity) USENET offers.

"Say you have just gotten back from your family vacation in the Bahamas
and you have 2-3 gigs of fun filled videos and pictures that you would
like to share with friends on the other side of the globe that also use
the Usenet. These 2-3 gigs of video and pictures are equal to about
2,048 to 3,072 megabytes of binary digital information. Just like
email, 3,072 megabytes is too large to attach to a single email and
must be broken into smaller parts and sent in multiple emails. These
vacation videos and pictures would be made up of hundreds of encoded
newsgroup text articles."

Perhaps you have some video of war crimes being perpetrated, posting it
anywhere else, like FB, might not be in one's best interest.

posting. Only a couple are politics free and they are very much
special interest groups.

The binary groups are virtually dead.

Dead in what way? Lack of idle banter, chatter, and politics? Yes, I

Not if you want or need anonymity.

I don't disagree with what they said in their blog, but I don't know how it
relates to your 'rosy' comment.

You claimed that binary groups are virtually dead, but the exact opposite

congregate and communicate, but binary traffic is anything but dead.

Perhaps you have some video of war crimes being perpetrated, posting it
anywhere else, like FB, might not be in one's best interest.

https://www.usenet.com/what-is-a-binary-file/

Exactly. I consider that to be abuse, but I've seen it done more than a few
times. Usually they'll protect it with a password, then share the pw and
downloading instructions via email.

I used to use the music groups (alt.binaries.sounds ...) but they are
all virtually dead. I just downloaded headers for the first time in
over a month and there were only a handful of new posts. It used to be
it was over a million new headers in a couple weeks (the limit for

These days it is easier to rip the music from you tube I guess.

My music collection is essentially complete, as very little new music
interests me, but if I lost it and wanted to recreate it via Usenet, I
could. Rather than searching a specific group, I'd do a global search
across all groups. Sometimes people move from one group to another for
various reasons, so a global search usually finds content that seems to be
missing. Also keep in mind that most video uploads (movies, TV programs,
concerts, music videos, etc) are obfuscated, so you need to know how to
deal with that.
