Two references for your thought

"The new coronavirus spreads mainly via airborne transmission and
wearing a mask is the most effective way to stop person-to person
spread, according to a new study.

A team of researchers in Texas and California compared Covid-19
infection rate trends in Italy and New York both before and after face
masks were made mandatory. Both locations started to see infection rates
flatten only after mandatory face mask measures were put in place,
according to the study published Thursday in the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences.

The researchers calculated that wearing face masks prevented more than
78,000 infections in Italy between April 6 and May 9, and more than
66,000 infections in New York City between April 17 and May 9.

"Wearing of face masks in public corresponds to the most effective means
to prevent interhuman transmission, and this inexpensive practice, in
conjunction with simultaneous social distancing, quarantine, and contact
tracing, represents the most likely fighting opportunity to stop the
COVID-19 pandemic, prior to the development of a vaccine" they wrote."

"Face masks dont even have to work especially well to be effective"

It could also be said the economy opened up more and more people were
mingling.

I bet a big part of the spike here is all of these protests. Those
people are not doing anything right if avoiding the virus is on their
mind.
Of course the tear gas doesn't help. Everyone is coughing.

While the virus might exist for a while on surfaces they are saying most
of the spread is person to person through sprays created when people
sneeze or cough or even talk and any mask is better than nothing.

Perhaps if you are coughing and sneezing it would be worthwhile,
assuming a real mask, not a bandanna tied "frito bandito" around your
face and if that real mask was properly worn. Both are rare.
Unfortunately the reality is most of the "masks" I see are fashion
statements, not medical protection.

Still don't get it huh?

Then there are the people who are not coughing and sneezing. What is
the mask doing for them?

Almost nothing, they are not PPE. They wear them for the rest of the
community.

If you are staying your required six feet
away, they shouldn't be spitting on you when they talk.

It is about aerosol, not just about spitting.

Aerosols will penetrate a cloth mask, they only claim to stop
"droplets" which will fall to the floor immediately. (unless we have
suspended gravity along with common sense).

Apparently "immediately" means by the time it takes to move 6 feet at
breath speed.
