Default Will America Choose Its Children Over Guns?

As surely as there are camels backs and straws to break them, moments
arrive when citizens say theyve had enough, when they rise up against
political leaders who do not speak for them and whose moral fecklessness
imperils lives. We may be witness to such a moment now with the protests
by American teenagers sickened €” and terrified €” by the latest mass
murder at the hands of someone with easy access to a weapon fit for a
battlefield, not a school.

These kids have had enough. Theyve had enough of empty expressions of
sympathy in the wake of the sort of atrocities theyve grown up with,
like last weeks mass shooting that took 17 lives at a high school in
Parkland, Fla. Enough of the ritualistic mouthing of thoughts and
prayers for the victims. Enough of living in fear that they could be
next in the cross hairs of a well-armed deranged killer, even with all
the active shooter drills and lockdowns theyve gone through. Enough of
craven politicians who kneel before the National Rifle Association and
its cynically fundamentalist approach to the Second Amendment.

You do realize that weapons " fit for a battlefield" (assault weapons) were
banned for a decade or so in the early 90s, right? Didn't have much effect.

So what would happen if they banned ALL guns? And confiscated existing
ones. What would happen is that illegal guns would get very expansive.
Those without the cash would go back to making zip guns, not a difficult
thing to do. Or bombs or grenades Also not difficult. Or use knives,
swords, clubs.

Americans have had guns for 100s of years now; initially, they were a
necessity, now not so much. Despite all those guns there were relatively
few mass killings until around 1970 which is around the time when the
nuclear family started disintegrating. Now, a newly born kid is more lilely
to be a ******* than not...around 29% for whites, 45% for latinos and a mind
boggling 72% for blacks.

Now we have scads of people that were raised in a half-assed manner by a
government agency or government supported single parent. Many to most are
poor both in money and education and they are likely to stay that way
throughout their lives. Why change? The feds will take care of them. And
their progeny.

Banning guns won't have anymore affect on mass shootings than raising the
minimum wage does on poverty. To cure either, you need to cure society.

Meh. I was raised by a single mother (back when there was
a stigma associated with that) who left me with the neighbor.
I enjoyed enriching activities like watching soaps and game shows
and inhaling cigarette smoke.

However, I was expected to behave in a civilized (age-appropriate)
manner and it was made clear that school was important and I
should consider it my job to bring home all A's.

Each year in the USA, 3 million "children" become adults who are
eligible to vote. Those politicians who pay attention to the young
people and act on their concerns will have a longer tenure in their
jobs.

As a politician, you ignore young people at your own peril. They might
not donate much money to your campaign, but they can be very vocal on
social media and they can rally large numbers of voters much more
readily than can the old farts.

The neighbor is better than a lot of daycare warehouses though.
Sounds like mom had a good handle on proper behavior also. That seems
to have been lost in much of the present generation.

If your children are internet users, set them up on an online auctionsite to bid on the clothes that they want within a pre-set budget.
