ANALYSIS-Road to electric car paradise paved with handouts

Reuters Staff

* Worldwide, subsidies still drive electric car markets

* Dependence may complicate bid to phase out combustion engines

* On Norway's Finnoey, a fifth of cars are electric

* Free use of tunnel can mean savings of $6,000 a year

Without knowing the cost of ventilating a multi-mile tunnel with a
junction in the middle, you can't say whether letting electric vehicles
use it free is a subsidy or just common sense. After all, if all
vehicles were electric, they could switch the ventilation off.

The cost of ventilation is minimal compared to the other costs. You are
paying for the bonding to pay for construction

And God knows what else too, if it works like anything like
all the govt things here in the USA. What's the NYC bridge and
tunnel tolls now, $15 for Hudson River ones, $18 for Verrazano?
That money goes into the Port Authority of NY/NJ and pays for
airports and whatever else they feel like. It's a black hole,
filled with union jobs, crony contractors, little accountability.
And the dumb citizens just accept it. The only time they get
any attention is when they shut down the entrance ramps for
political retribution.

Agree, with the ventilation thing, it's a red herring. That cost
is miniscule in the grand scheme of things.

so electrics should pay a
share of that too.

If all cars were electric you could greatly reduce but not eliminate
ventilation.

Electrics are getting a free ride on road taxes used to maintain and
build roads. What would cover that is suddenly all cars were lectric?
