The "reason"? Call it an Investment.

It is illegal to privately modify say an AR or AK to full auto Class
III.

In 1986 they also froze the class III registry so nothing after that
could be added. That means if the machine gun was not already owned by
an individual at that time, it could not be sold to another
individual. (no transfers to civilian ownership from the military or
police either)
The Class III process typically takes 3-6 months to complete, costs
$200 (non-refundable) for the application/stamp and will need to also
be legal in your state/local laws. An individual also needs a sign off
by the local Chief Law Enforcement Official after BATF and the FBI has
inspected the application.
All of this scrutiny may be why there has never been a documented
crime with a legally owned machine gun.

As for the investment aspect, it is real. I made 10x on the one I
owned when I sold it.
