Their latest add campaign touts the SAFETY of their vehicles.
I can just see what the original copy might have looked like:
"Sure, we cheated on our mileage/emissions testing. But,
we'd NEVER cheat on our safety/crash tests!"

(Time to bring back the Joe Isuzu commercials: "You have my word on it!")

As I understand it the actual owners get good mileage and a diesel that
performs better than a Freightliner for a change. The only people that
got cheated were the tight-assed EPA bureaucrats.

Right! No problem that they pollute 40 times the standards. Only people have to
breath that crud. Who cares about them? Screw them and the EPA bureaucrats.

I live in an area that ranks number 10 for short-term particle
pollution. A TDI diesel is a drop in the bucket. Oh, and that pollution?
The forest fires that occur every August. Find a way to stop that and
I'll worry about diesel emissions.

Most greenhouse gases are emitted naturally and carbon dioxide is not
the worst but it was easiest to trace to mans activities. Progressives
will seize onto anything to increase the size and influence of government.

Diesels pollute less because of better fuel efficiency. I'd only want a
refund if the car would not pass the states test inspection standard.

The EPA standards for diesels have NOTHING to do with CO2 or greenhouse gases,
and their unhealthy pollutants are heavily distributed in highly populated
areas.

Your right, there are other pollutants that we want to keep down and I
certainly do not object about clean air.

I think they should do away with current annual or bi-annual checks and
just put detectors out on the roads like speed traps just to get off the
big polluters. One malfunctioning car, truck or bus may be spewing our
more crap than 100 surrounding vehicles. We've all smelled them on the
road.

There are the proggies that object to all gasses from vehicles, not just
CO2 but even water vapor.

What gets me is the arrogance of these morons who actually believe the "Normal" activities of humans will change anything but their local environment. Of course if we start a nuclear war, all those H-bombs going off will have a global effect just as setting fire to half a continent or to major oil fields will spew pollution into the Earth's atmosphere that can be detected on the other side of the largest ocean. A single volcanic eruption can shut down air travel across a continent. As far as I know, no "Normal" human activity can do the same. o_O

That you have backwards. At city miles diesel cars can get twice the
mileage than their gasoline counterpart. I think half the cars in
Europe are diesel because it must be priced the same as gas and the cars
get twice the mileage. Not in US because diesel price is not fixed by
the government.

Yes, the illegal VW's get better milage. And produced huge amounts of illegal
pollutants which are known hazards.

from https://www.osha.gov/dts/hazardalert...ard_alert.html
What are the health effects of DE/DPM?
a.. Short term exposure to high concentrations of DE/DPM can cause headache,
dizziness, and irritation of the eye, nose and throat severe enough to distract
or disable miners and other workers.
b.. Prolonged DE/DPM exposure can increase the risk of cardiovascular,
cardiopulmonary and respiratory disease and lung cancer.
In June, 2012, the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) classified DE
(including DPM) as a known human carcinogen (Group 1).

That would be "up to" 40 times. As soon as you see the words "up to" the
figure following is meaningless. Nowhere have I seen how much they actually
put out under real-world driving conditions or, given the tiny amounts
involved, whether it's going to make a material difference in air quality.

How much pollution will be emitted from the manufacturing of replacement
vehicles? For an accurate picture be sure to start from the mining of
the raw materials and include the energy used.

I think they should do away with current annual or bi-annual checks

off the big polluters. One malfunctioning car, truck or bus may be
spewing our more crap than 100 surrounding vehicles. We've all
smelled them on the road.

There are the proggies that object to all gasses from vehicles, not
just CO2 but even water vapor.

All the faulty VW's are producing many times the limits. THAT is a real problem!

I thought global warming was a real problem. Snicker, snicker. Here we go...

All the faulty VW's number about 70,000. I wonder how the total yearly
emissions compare to a Freightliner? The standard is 0.053 ppm, so 40
times that puts us up to a massive 2.12 ppm. 2 ppm is about the CO
level in most homes.

It will be hard to make a mountain out of that molehill.

No, no, no. Transgender access to restrooms is the real problem. I
don't know how anyone can sleep at night with all those pressing problems.

Could you come up with a concrete number for YUGE?

Right! No problem that they pollute 40 times the standards. Only people have to
breath that crud. Who cares about them? Screw them and the EPA bureaucrats.

You're asking for a real world cost/benefit analysis. That ain't going
to happen any time soon. UP TO 40 TIMES MORE gets better contributions
and funding.

Only the clueless think there can be only one problem caused by exhaust.

Do you understand 'concrete'. How many tons of nitrogen oxide per year
are produced by the 70,000 affected TDI engines in the US? How does this
compare to the overall production of nitrogen oxide from other sources?
'Up to 40 times' doesn't mean **** to a tree.

Trees kinda like ****. It means a lot to VW. Corporate cheaters deserve at least
what it costs them. Slaps on the wrist are what they usually get.
