OT - snow far
 

Northern DE so far about a foot. All is fine here but it is windy and
power outages are biggest near the coast where my brother lives.

We are right in the center of biggest accumulation and I expect another
foot. It must have been '96 when I bought my snow thrower after a 22
inch snow. I shoveled it then but my back didn't like it.

I recall '78 in Boston... close to 30" in 2 days. Of course, they've got
no place to "push" the stuff so everything had to be loaded onto dump trucks
with front end loaders and "driven" away.

Was nice to be in the city with *zero* traffic for a while! Thankfully,
I'd thought ahead and "stored" the car in the company parking garage.
Granted, it wasn't accessible -- but, also didn't get side-swiped by a
snow plow on the street!

These nor'easters can get pretty nasty. They sort of sit there and draw
moisture off the ocean. My memory goes back over many years but that 22
inch I mentioned was worse in last 10 years. I recall one in March
maybe 30 years ago that totally socked us in with roads to my area
impassable.

I might get out Monday morning at best. My wife, with her new knee,
says she'll be home all week. I'm scheduled for a blood test Monday and
she has a check up with orthopedic surgeon Wednesday but both may be
postponed.

I remember discovering the limits of my Subaru when I was driving
through a field and did not realize the snow had drifted and it lifted
the wheels off the ground. Fortunately I had a shovel to lower the car
and back out.

This is the truck we used to clear the roads and runway at the Coast Guard
station in Port Clarence, AK. If I recall correctly, it had a 12 cylinder
diesel engine to run the truck and another 12 cylinder diesel engine to
run the blower.

In that picture it is clearing the 1/4 mile long road to the transmitter
building where I spent most of my time. Running along side the road, was
an above ground tunnel that we used to walk (or bike) to the T-building
in bad weather.

23 miles West of Philly, it was about 18" when I started clearing it.

That was 2 hours ago and it's been snowing hard since.

Wind gusting into the low thirties.... 50-60 at the Jersey Shore.

I'm thinking 24" or more for the Philly area.

I won't even try until tomorrow. Seems to me now thrown off to the side
creates a bigger trough for blown or new snow to deposit into.
Living in Hockessin, I'm about 40 miles from Philly. Maybe closer to
your area.

My brother made out well as it turned more to rain down in Lewes where
he lives. Power was out when my sister in law woke up early but my
brother slept through it.

I'm not sure what our snowfall numbers are but also know that one place
could get several inches more or less just a few miles away. They did
say on one of the Philly TV stations that they are getting nearly as
much snow from this one snow as they did all last winter.

My brother's picture was from this morning so I'm sure
it's much, much deeper by now.

My picture is just snow left over from the past week. I'm no
where near NYC/Long Island so I'm not getting any snow from
this storm.

pizza but power has been staying on. On-line paper said they had to
close the refinery about 20 miles away because of outage.

Next door neighbor and family are in Puerto Rico for sons wedding and
we're watching another neighbors house while they are in India. They're
smarter than us.

Supreme Pizza Dip

Ingredients
1-8 ounce block cream cheese, room temperature

with sausage, pepperoni, bell pepper, olives and mushrooms. Bake for
15-20 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly.

Serve immediately with garlic toast or bread, or celery sticks

Their part of India is somewhat tropical.

Puerto Rican climate appears really nice with 80 degree summers and 70
degree winters.

Work brought them both to the US. Indian friend and coworker has been
here over 50 years going to grad school here. PR folks wife got
transferred here from chemical industry there.

Only 16" east of DC. Nearly twice as much on the western side of the city.
This is the typical heat island effect where the storm "splits" and tends to
move north or south of the city. I suspect that's why Micky, living IIRC in
the South Baltimore area, got whacked with 36" of snow. I think he got some
extra that had been headed my way! Thanks, Micky, for taking the hit for
me!

The drifting left some places at way over 36" (like my front porch) and I
couldn't open my storm door. The local juvenile delinquent shoveled me out
(for $50 but it was worth every cent). Only major problem was that the city

We are right in the center of biggest accumulation and I expect another
foot. It must have been '96 when I bought my snow thrower after a 22
inch snow. I shoveled it then but my back didn't like it.

The news has been telling us how many have died so far.

I wonder, what is the normal and expected daily death
count from auto accidents? Our roads are a slaughter house.

And, how do the two compare? The snow may be a blessing in
disguise. (Although not if you are one of the dead ones
in either of the statistics.)

This is the typical heat island effect where the storm "splits" and tends to
move north or south of the city. I suspect that's why Micky, living IIRC in
the South Baltimore area, got whacked with 36" of snow. I think he got some
extra that had been headed my way! Thanks, Micky, for taking the hit for
me!

The drifting left some places at way over 36" (like my front porch) and I
couldn't open my storm door. The local juvenile delinquent shoveled me out
(for $50 but it was worth every cent). Only major problem was that the city

They come back and clear your EOD? Wow! We are basically on our own. The plow makes 2 passes up my short street. Because of the configuration of my neighborhood, they make a
pass heading west, which puts mounds in front of the houses on the north side of the street.
Then they make a U turn and come back, putting a mound on the south side. If I happen to be
out shoveling or blowing at the time, the driver will sometimes slow and dip his blow into the
mound at my EOD and move what he can.

How long does it take for them to come back if you "complain"? If everyone complained,
how would they get anything done? You can't just fly by when you are clearing EOD piles.
It takes a lot longer to finesse them out of the way without tearing up lawns, taking out
poles, etc. at least where I live.

Official count in my area this am was only a little over a foot.

Certainly more than that on my driveway, like a foot and a half, nearly
2 feet on my walk.

Plow always messes me up as I had it piled in front of drive and had to
pull snow thrower back and forth to get through it.

Snow thrower had been run dry last year, I filled it, and it started
with push of button.

I'd like to give a shout out to the EPA for those wonderful, mandated
gas cans which are spill proof but you end up with gas all over the
place when you try to use them.

Might also mention that a friend of my wife says guy that plows her
driveway charges $10/inch.
