Nomophobia:

"...a UK-based research organisation to look at anxieties suffered by
mobile phone users. The study found that nearly 53% of mobile phone
users in Britain tend to be anxious when they "lose their mobile
phone, run out of battery or credit, or have no network coverage". The
study found that about 58% of men and 48% of women suffer from the
phobia, and an additional 9% feel stressed when their mobile phones
are off. "

I have to agree,,,,,

Myself, I have a prepaid phone (only makes calls and sends texts). That
is all I'll ever own, other than maybe getting one with a camera. My
cellphone is turned off 99% of the time. I only turn it on when I need
to make a call, or on the rare occasion that I'm expecting an important
business call, or during some emergency.

If people want to call, I have a landline with an answering machine. I
rarely answer that one either. Use the machine, or dont bug me. I
think all phones are annoying to say the least. I remember that before
I got the answering machine, I always felt obligated to pick up the
phone when it rang. That's why I got the machine, cuz people always
seem to call at the worst time. There is no way in hell that I want
that annoyance box ringing when I'm driving, or at any time where I'm
away from home.

I used to think texting was stupid too, but actually they are another
way to communicate without being pestered. I read them when I turn on
the phone, which might be days later. That's why I tell friends and
family to use the landline machine if they want a fast response.

This Wi-Fi light bulb looks far beyond ridiculous. If people want
mood-lighting, put the damn control on the wall or have a remote.
Phones are for phone calls!!!!

Phones are for phone calls.
Computer based web browsers are for web browsing.
Still cameras are for taking pictures.
Video cameras are for recording videos.
Walkie Talkies are for push to talk instant voice to voice communications.
GPS's are for navigation.
Remote controls are for controlling devices remotely.
Maps are for finding routes.
Flashlights are for making the darkness bright.
Calculators are for doing math.
Radios are for music, news, talk shows and weather.
TV's are for watching shows - especially sports.
Movie theaters are for watching movies.

I'm glad my smart phone can handle all of those tasks, and so much more.

And psychiatrists are for people who spend their whole life staring into
the screen on their phone. (At least those who dont get killed while
staring into that phone while driving 75mph in heavy traffic).

Do yourself a favor. Save the psychiatrist bills and/or the car crash
that kills you.

Place that smart phone under your car tire, and drive over it at least
10 times. If it still works, use a sledge hammer on it!

OR

While driving 75mph in heavy traffic, toss it out the car window into
any traffic lane.

OR

Give it to your psychiatrist and tell him to dispose of it for you,
because it's the main cause of your mental illness.

If all else fails, any 22 caliber or larger pistol or rifle will blast
enough holes in that smart phone to render it dead. (A chainsaw or
bandsaw is also a useful tool to destroy a smart phone).

Stupid people waste their lives staring at the screens on Smart phones,
and miss out on life around them!

No, I don't think i'll buy a Wi-Fi bulb just yet; but I do like the control
system that works with my smart phone. When I drive home from the airport
on a cold winter night after a week-long trip, the phone can switch on the
heat as I leave the parking lot and the garage lights as I pull into the
driveway. Energy savings and convenience in one device.

Let's see how much life I've missed since this thread started:

Thursday night: The wife and I went downtown to see an outdoor show.

Friday night: The wife and I went downtown and saw a play that my son
had a part in.

Saturday: Spent the morning helping one son with some electrical work
at his house and spent the afternoon with my wife and other son moving
5 yards of mulch. The evening was spent quietly with the wife catching
up on some shows we had DVR'd.

Sunday: Morning: bagels and coffee with the wife. Afternoon:
drywalling with my son. Evening: A walk down by the bay with the wife
and dogs and then back home to watch Baltimore beat New England.

During that time when I "missed so much life", I had some texting
sessions with my 2 daughters who are away at college. There was some
fun stuff, with pictures, that one daughter wanted to share with me
and there was some serious job related stuff that the other daughter
needed some advice on. Using your method of keeping the phone off and
relying on landline, I would have missed both of those very important
parts of my life because they were spur of the moment contacts
initiated by my daughters. Everytime I see one of my kid's names show
up on my phone, I feel good that they are part of my life and either
want to share something with me or need some advice. The occasional
text that says nothing more than "Hi!" makes me smile.

I used the calculator on my phone during the drywall session, I used
the map app to find parking for the downtown shows, I used the
flashlight to find the poop my dog dropped during a walk after dark, I
used the camera to take some pictures of the wiring, I used the phone
to call a hardware store.

It's perfectly fine with me that you don't want to use a smart phone.
I won't call you stupid or suggest that you need to see a mental
health specialist. However, you should be aware (and accept) that many
people don't sit around "staring at the screens on Smart phones" and
missing out on life. What they do is incorporate the features
available on the device into their activities to help them live their
lives to fullest.

Have you been going to your DTA (Duct Tape Anonymous) meetings regularly ?

Leave duct tape out of this.

I pulled the 4X4 front hub locks out of my truck. Yep, duct tape to
cover the holes exposing the wheel bearings. Duct tape stops dirt...

Duct tape stop 75 MPH winds too.

I had some repairs done to my van which required R & R of the plastic
wheel well covers. Either the clips were worn or the mechanic didn't
insert them properly, but the cover popped off on the highway and fell
against the tire. I popped it back into place as best I could on the
side of the highway, but as soon as I got above 40 MPH it popped off
again.

I couldn't let it rub on the tire for the rest of my 700 mile trip, so
I grabbed the roll of duct tape from my tool box and taped the cover
back into place, wrapping the tape up onto the bumper cover. It
handled 75 MPH speeds for the rest of the weekend until I got back
home and secured it properly.

But unfortunately I don't have the multi-million dollar sponsors paying for

I discovered a hole in the RV vent at camp. Took out my gorilla tape. There
was nothing else to do, and the trailer does not move.

I still have a little green 100 mph tape I used to buy from sportsman
guide. That was the best, since it has some stretch. I use it sparingly.

Certainly can't argue with that one. Best things in life aren't things is
sooo true.

That reminds me, my iPad when in standby mode, still reads my email,
and beeps. Just recently found out. I wonder what else it's doing
connected to wifi.

Greg

Well, if you've downloaded the new operating system, you could ask
Siri since she's now on your iPad as an option.

Tomsic

Only if it's the new iPad. Siri won't hang out with the iPad 1 or iPad
2 crowd.

Oh, a snob huh?

Great for alt.home.repair!

Terrorist will love it for the possibilities for use as a stealth
detonator. I can imagine all sorts of nefarious uses for an item
like that. Darn, I could be a really evil terrorist if I wasn't so
civilized. I suppose I could also write TV scripts. ^_^

*** TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT ***

Smart people destroy Smart phones!

Stupid people waste their lives staring at the screens on Smart phones,
and miss out on life around them!

Me and JH were installing the computer network, point of sale and
telephone systems in a new women's clothing store a few months back
and the cute little gals who worked there often had near collisions
with me as I walked through the store because they were staring at
their smart phones as they walked full speed toward me. JH is very
worried about his daughter who texts while driving but he dials and
talks while driving which I think is just as dangerous. I have a pager
with the same number for the last 25 years and that's how I want to
be contacted when I'm driving, I call after I stop and turn on one of
two cellphones I carry. ^_^

Won't you be surprised when a bunch of burly thugs hop out of a POS van
and come at you. The grey duct tape "flags" hanging from suspenders are a
giveaway.

Then there would be a pile of chewed-up and shot "burly thugs" next to that
POS van.
I promise to make sure she doesn't keep any souvenirs.
