Default $26 million home rehab

"When the Texas Governor's Mansion was officially inaugurated in August
1856, at least some of the Bastrop-pine floors had oilcloth coverings, a
stylish touch of the day that caused then-Gov. Elisha Pease to brag about it
in a letter to his wife.

"Years later, the floors got makeovers that lasted through the years —
sanded and refinished many times, no doubt — until an arsonist torched the
stately Greek Revival landmark on June 8, 2008, and the resulting cascade of
firefighting water left the modern wood floors cupped and buckled."

I expect there are many better uses this money could be put to in
these times.

So while the poor in America eat grass, your aristoclepts are spending
$26M on a refurb. Who's living under the heel of their monarchy?

A typical example of Perry's cut backs. They wanted to spend $27M on it, he
said no. Now he brags he "saved" the taxpayers $1M

Do the UK palace guards still use bear hide/hair in those funny hats?
That must cost plenty of money for keeping the Queen protected.

Not really. Texas has a budget surplus and about $9 billion in its "rainy
day" fund.

Last year the (then Democratic) legislature wanted to spend $1B of our "rainy
day fund" on roads, to be apportioned "equally" among counties. IOW, Obama's
"shovel-ready" boondoggle meets Alabama's old-boy network. The answer was a
resounding "NO!", and a Republican legislature (both houses) for the first
time in 165 years.
