My Ryobi 14.4 volt drill is not working. The battery is fully charged
at 14.5 volts and the flashlight that comes with it is bright but the
drill doesn't do a damn thing regardless of what position any of the
switches on it are set at. I assume the trigger switch is bad. Any
suggestions?

Clean the contacts on the drill, a solvent like alcohol a small brush
or rag then use an eraser on the contacts, an ink pen is best as its
more course. if it doesnt help try brake or electric component cleaner
in a spray can in the switch=- Let it Dry first a long time, if you
dont have any you could pour in alcohol or something like a bit of
laquer thinner, let it dry for about 6 hours or you might have the
real meaning of Fire It Up. Or open the handle see if wires are loose
and trace it with a meter to see where power fails. If its had tons of
use check motor brushes.

Take the handle apart and jump the switch. If it runs it's the switch,
if it don't, it's probably the motor. If it's under warranty bring it
back (before) you take it apart.
Did you try all settings, reverse, low, high etc.?

On my Makita, there is a center position on the FORWARD/REVERSE switch.
Well, maybe it is not a position, but if you get there, the drill is
D-E-A-D. Took me a while to figger that out, but I finally did.

You might check that and any other obvious stuff.

After that, you're on your own.

OPen it up and look for the open wire or battery connection, etc.. Or see
if anyone cares to repair it; they might. I would offer to at least look at
such a thing for a price; it's almost always one of the wires at the switch
that break, right close to one of the posts.

In warranty, let them deal with it. Otherwise, turn the
chuck by hand, and try it again (check for intermittent
brushes).

You can take the battery out, open it up, and use a VOM to
test the switches.

Your new ISP might not provide their own news server, but there are
plenty of other news servers out there that are accessable from any
ISP. Some charge a fee (especially those that provide a lot of binary
groups), but others are free. In other words, don't go away just
because you change ISPs.

Thank you for the helpful comments and even the unhelpful ones.

I took the thing apart and moved switches and wires around. I found
nothing wrong physically. After reassembling it the thing started
working! It is possible the REVERSE/FORWARD switch was not making
proper contact but it felt fine before I disassembled the drill. In
any case, it is working like new again.

Believe it or not I take Libertarian view of the subject. Adults should
be able to do whatever they want to "themselves". That includes drugs,
alcohol and the intentional inhalation of toxic fumes. I am very, very
allergic to tobacco smoke, it has the effect of pepper spray on me and
my friends who are smokers know this and are careful not to harm me.
Those who refuse to are not my friends. I was a nicotine baby, I went
cold turkey at the age of one day. My exposure has caused terrible
health problems for me from the time I was a child and I've seen the
same health and behavior problems in the children of smokers that I
went through. So please forgive me for being concerned and somewhat
outspoken. When I see a small child who can't breathe and can't sit
still because of his exposure to an insidious drug his mother pumped
into him in the womb and his mother is wiping his nose while a cigarette
dangles out of her mouth, I get a bit angry. It's no secret, people
know better now and there's no excuse. I have a friend who lost a lung
due to lung cancer because of his smoking and refusal to wear a dust and
chemical filtering respirator when necessary. He stopped smoking for a
while then started sneaking them again. I've told him he's a grown man
and I can't tell him to quit but I tell him that the people who care
about him are very upset with him. I'm sure there are people who care
about you too, perhaps you should consider what your drug habit does
to them.

Acerbic - never been called that one! New material :-) Been called lots

I'm sure I'll look into it at some point, There's one heck of a honey-do

Ryobi is of lower quality. A corded Milwaulkee is top-quality and
about the same price as the cordless Ryobi. If you'd rather have a
better cordless try Makita or Panasonic.

If you are like me and love to check out pawn shops, flea markets and
yard sales, keep an eye out for another 14v Ryobi drill. Yours is the
exception to the rule on cordless --about 99% of the time the trouble is
batteries. The tools themselves usually don't break or wear out. If you
should happen to see one, you could probably buy it for a couple of
dollars and assume the batteries are shot. If you have a spare drill,
your original will never break again (Murphy's Law). I bought a 9.6
Makita wth two batteries and charger for $2.00 at a yard sale a couple
of weeks ago-- the guy said the batteries were bad, but they seem to
work fair, and I already had a couple of extra batteries I got for a
dime each from a pawn shop that was moving, and didn't want to move all
the loose crap they had laying around. Larry

There's many points above I fully agree with. Who could not get angry
with a "mother is wiping his nose while a cigarette dangles out of her
mouth". Hey, I know it stinks. Once I put the new carpet in this place I
rebuilt, I don't smoke in the house at all since it was planned for sale.
OK, in the crapper that has the fan once in a while. Just me and the cats
here. They never complain.

It's the whiners that get me. Such insecurity. Can't get themself higher
on the pedistal so try and make others appear lower to increase the gap.
Walk 20 ft from someone smoking and they do the retarded fake "cough
cough". So frikkin childish. But they don't hesitate to hop in the car
and suck up all the crap from other cars, busses and trucks around.

I wonder what they would do if all smoking stopped and smokers dropped
dead. Probably push for a caste system based on sins of the fathers. It's
just as retarded a concept as some of the **** they do now.

Smokers have every right to harm THEMSELVES. They have no right to harm
me and thee. If there are places where smokers congregate, fine, I don't
have to go there but there are places I have to go, like government
offices and other public venues. I don't drink alcohol and don't go to
smoke filled bars, if I do, because of my severe allergic reaction to
tobacco smoke, I'll be sick for several days. I think every adult has
a right to do whatever drug, drink or poison they want. Darn it, I've
lost a lot of people I cared about to heart attacks, lung cancer and
liver disease. I'm not in perfect health but I'm outlasting a lot of
friends and it really hurts to lose them. The younger they are, the more
tragic it is. I had a customer who was a nice kid in his early thirties,
a very aggressive lung cancer took him too soon. He was a heavy smoker
who left behind a wife and children. When I talk to my friends about
what they're doing to themselves, they answer, "I know." I don't try
to lecture them or pester them about it because it will just make them
hate the messenger but I will tell them I care about them from time to
time. I'm getting to point where I don't want to like anyone who has
self destructive habits anymore.

are just idiots who just like to whine to make themself feel better
and think they are better. Half the time they are just fat-****s who
get loaded on booze...but that's OK in their eyes. But they never
make a stink about the $ collected from the tax revenue it raises and
is used for totally unrelated issues.

All I did was ask if his handle was related to the acronym. You go
off on some political/social issue. Typical anti-smoker.

Oh well, in a few weeks I'll probably have to bail on newsgroups due
to a relocation where the ISP doesn't carry NG's. You should feel
better there's one less heathen smoker posting.

Believe it or not I take Libertarian view of the subject. Adults
should be able to do whatever they want to "themselves". That includes
drugs, alcohol and the intentional inhalation of toxic fumes. I am
very, very allergic to tobacco smoke, it has the effect of pepper
spray on me and my friends who are smokers know this and are careful
not to harm me. Those who refuse to are not my friends. I was a
nicotine baby, I went cold turkey at the age of one day. My exposure
has caused terrible health problems for me from the time I was a child
and I've seen the same health and behavior problems in the children of
smokers that I went through. So please forgive me for being concerned
and somewhat outspoken. When I see a small child who can't breathe and
can't sit still because of his exposure to an insidious drug his
mother pumped into him in the womb and his mother is wiping his nose
while a cigarette dangles out of her mouth, I get a bit angry. It's no
secret, people know better now and there's no excuse. I have a friend
who lost a lung due to lung cancer because of his smoking and refusal
to wear a dust and
chemical filtering respirator when necessary. He stopped smoking
for a
while then started sneaking them again. I've told him he's a grown man
and I can't tell him to quit but I tell him that the people who care
about him are very upset with him. I'm sure there are people who care
about you too, perhaps you should consider what your drug habit does
to them.

TDD

People can't believe how sensitive I am to the stuff. I can be driving
down the freeway at 70+ and know if the car in front of me contains a
smoker. My roommate smokes but goes outside to inhale the toxic
byproducts of combustion because he's considerate. We had a psychotic
visitor for a while who decided to light up in the house after he
consumed a little ethanol/apple juice mix (MD20/20). It's called wine
for some strange reason. I was ill for several days because of that
psychotic asshole. We tried to help him but it didn't last very long,
I loaded him up and gave him a ride to another friend of his across town
who was also a smoker so that at least worked out for him.

Hmmm. Interesting since half the crap contained in cigarettes is also
present in automobile exhaust. I surly hope you're not serious about that

Hey, that's no excuse. Just sign up for a free account at eternal-september
or a $2.99 account at giganews.com Most ISPs have dropped NGs recently but
the die hard are still here. If we didn't have access, we'd have to get a

what are you supposed to do with the left over parts?

Put them in the box where you put left-over parts. Be patient. Eventually
you'll have enough left-over parts to build a new one.

No ex-smoker was as surprised as I was after I quit. I've been around car
and diesel exhaust all my life, yet there is *something* about tobacco smoke
that is distintive and completely different. Bring me someone who was
around a smoker a week ago, and I can point him out. Show me someone who
thinks he can hide his smoking from his spouse, I'll show you someone who
was busted from the first minute. When you're in it, you can't notice
it...when you're out of it, you can't help but notice it. It's more
pervasive than anything I've ever known.

You "surly" hope. Nice play on words. Like I said people can't believe
it. I can tell when my friend with one lung has been smoking and I don't
have to say anything. He can see the disappointment on my face and he
knows he's busted.

For whatever reason, they don't want to standardize the
batteries. Even within the HF brand, there can be two or
three different style batteries of the same voltage. So,
when the battery eventually goes weak, you end up buying a
whole brand new whatever the device is. I suspect they like
selling "whole new".

If you are like me and love to check out pawn shops, flea

yard sales, keep an eye out for another 14v Ryobi drill.
Yours is the
exception to the rule on cordless --about 99% of the time
the trouble is
batteries. The tools themselves usually don't break or wear
out. If you
should happen to see one, you could probably buy it for a
couple of
dollars and assume the batteries are shot. If you have a
spare drill,
your original will never break again (Murphy's Law). I
bought a 9.6
Makita wth two batteries and charger for $2.00 at a yard
sale a couple
of weeks ago-- the guy said the batteries were bad, but they
seem to
work fair, and I already had a couple of extra batteries I
got for a
dime each from a pawn shop that was moving, and didn't want
to move all
the loose crap they had laying around. Larry

Carefull, there. I can often tell, sitting at a traffic
