Why would you want to defeat a safety function? It took a while for
UL to get that requirement, but it has saved many lives over the past
25 years.

I doubt it. Can you cite a single credible source regarding the "number
of lives" that pesky wide prong has saved?

In 1950 there were 1,000 electrocutions in the US per year. Since then,
the population has doubled and we have ten times more appliances, so
there would be 20,000 a year. Instead, there are 400. So that's 19,600
lives saved a year, or 490,000 in 25 years.
