grip surface for exterior stairs
Hi,
What are some good materials to place on the tread for my exterior stairs? I've thought of thin wire (may cause a toe to catch on it though) and roof shingles (which easily shed/wear), but I think there must be some better materials. thanks |

compelled Nate Nagel , to say: sluggo wrote: Hi, What are some good materials to place on the tread for my exterior stairs? We had this stuff in the Navy called non-skid. It goes on like paint. I don't know where you'd buy it, though. Maybe West Marine? nate -- Don't worry about people stealing an idea. First thing tried was the adhesive sandpaper strips. They will peal off painted wooden surfaces eventually. If you have snow the snow shovel will catch the edge and speed up the process. Second thing tried was putting grit into the paint. I believe it is silica sand sold at paint stores for this purpose. It works but only creates limited traction. Third thing I might try eventually is something like stapling horse shoe shaped staples into the wood in a random pattern. Stainless if available or just paint over the top when done. A method like this should work the best, assuming wooden stairs. |

http://www.floormat-store.com/stair-...air-Tread.html I've used these on a lot of jobs and absolutely love them, extremely durable (holds up well to collage dorm life (kegs being dragged up stairs....), only available in black, so easier to close jobs due to less fuss over colors and they're half the price of traditional aluminum stair treads. Or aluminum stair treads if your pockets are deep for the project... http://www.floormat-store.com/stair-...ir-Treads.html www.floormat-store.com also sells blemished stair treads for super cheap http://www.floormat-store.com/stair-...ds.html#treads The ones they sell blemished aren't made for outdoor applications, but with some treads as much as 75% off, you can't beat that. I will warn you though, they are blemished products, it ranges from small blisters to... well, this one time, I had a pink toned gray tread arrive. Grit tapes are really only good if they are recessed into your tread, otherwise, the first brooding teenager or elderly shuffler that walks up your stairs will rip it off. Oh, one other product I've used in the past with great success are "Tire Tiles"; they're 1'x1' tiles (or 1' wide rolls if you prefer) of recycled tires that have been scuffed up to create a carpet texture. Been about 20 years since that project, but they're holding up strong. Looks like floormat store is carrying the musson rubber model for that too, which is the brand I used: TT12 Recycled Tire Tiles Oh man, a quick reply turned into a book... hope this helps at least. I'm new to these boards - just found it on a google search - if anyone has any questions about stair coverings, feel free to PM me, I've got a lot of experience in the field working with quite a few different brands.
