I forgot my password to unlock vista, I use a fingerprint reader all
the time. I want to load a program that wont load and was instructed
to close startup programs but I wonder if that closes my fingerprint
reader and I am worried I wont be able to log on. Will this happen, is
there an easy way to reset the main password. When my external
fingerprint reader fails I am also in trouble.

There are password recovery programs and services available. I was given an old
laptop, and used a free one of these which did find the password for that
laptop.

The administrator account is disabled by default in Vista and does not
have a password. Assuming you haven't changed that - if you turn the
computer off, you can press F8 repeatedly when booting to go into Safe
Mode. Log in with administrator (enabled only in Safe Mode) and go to
Control Panel, User Accounts, and change the password for the account
you normally use.

All of these replies and not one thing that is slightly related to
home repair. Wouldn't there have been a better group for this
discussion?

Why exactly do you need a fingerprint reader to access your computer?
Is this a home computer or work?
If this is at home, who exactly is it that you dont trust that well.
I dunno........if I had to do all that at home just to get on my
computer, Id just throw the damn thing in the garbage and give up on
them all together.

One of my clients dropped off a computer with a fingerprint setup,
(probably screwing with me) I called him the next day to say it was
ready, & he said how did you get in.
I said I unplugged it and logged in, when it was gone the computer
adjusted and allowed normal log in. while I was in there I plugged it
in and gave my self a log in with the fingerprint scan with
administration privileges
Had that failed i would have used windows key;
