That group has motivated someone to semi-officially (unofficially given
that alt.hvac has no official anything?) post a killfile for that group
that has at least largely only 3 or so notable bullies!

ESR wrote instructions on how to ask questions the smart way.

http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Basically, do your homework--show you've put in some effort to answer your
own question. Nobody was born knowing everything; the people you're asking
to help you got help from someone in their past.
Most folks remember this and repay their debts by helping others. These are
the people you're looking for.

As for the assholes? People *do* have a right to be assholes if that's what
they want. Don't worry about them. Take what you need and leave the rest.
Keep coming back and more will be revealed to you when you are ready.

Who knows. Some people enjoy having power over others. Maybe they're
afraid of losing their jobs. Maybe they need the power, because they
were the ones who almost flunked out of high school.

What I don't understand is...If they really don't enjoy helping
people...then why do they bother with usenet?

But on Usenet, nobody has power over anyone else, and so the jerk-offs
on alt.hvac ("Paul, "Bubba", and company) don't understand the concept
of Usenet.

What I don't understand is...If they really don't enjoy helping
people...then why do they bother with usenet?

To act out their psychopathic sadistic tendencies?

On most of the forums such as alt.hvac and web sites where "pros" are
posting, it seems like they flame DIYers especially if prices are
discussed. There is a fear of the free market. Hey' everybody else
works in a job market where market forces determine the price!
Therefore, if it is necessary to do so, don't hesitate to post prices.
Comparison shopping is good. Everyone understand that specific
circumstances may be different and all prices posted aren't comparable,
but more information is always good.

It is sad to see a few members of some groups play their little games -
that is what hiding behind an electronic network will do - bring out
the AH's. It also brings out people who have real expertise and offer
their expertise and knowledge to the rest of us.

Like to be able to meet some of these AH's - always wondered what their
problem(s) are - psych types call it compensation for an actual or
percieved problem. Ah well may the AH's depart the gene pool quickly.

The Mental Ownership of a piece of the internet is very great for

of the internet. NONE but the ones who own it in their mines.

I posted a question there - and promptly got told by an AH that
consumers did not belong on that site. Several people jumped on his
greasy back.

I had a specific question - see below

Question posted on alt hvac
Am in planning stage of building a new home in S WI. Have talked to
several HVAC dealers - learned tube type HX are much more reliable than

clamshells - I suppose most agree with that.

Now are there differences between tube type HX's from manufacturer to
manufacturer. Most of the internal parts look very similiar - like
PC's - umpteen brands with very few manufacturer's of the basic parts.

Are there differences in types of HX tubes - if so which brand(s) are
better and why.

Responses seemed to indicate that there are differences in HX tube
design. Amen on the biggest priority being getting a system correctly
designed and installed. Now back to the question - which manufacturer
makes a better HX tube or on the flip side - whose should be avoided.
They all looked the same to me - there are some differences.

Thanks all

Thanks

Don't know which specific model/manufacturer is better, but it would be
reflected in the overall reliability of the model. Newer models use
different designs and materials (stainless, "Tufsteel", etc.), so the
reliability may vary year to year. As a homeowner, I don't think you
need be concerned about this aspect, and instead concentrate on a good
installer and warranty.

over the last few months is finally drowning out the few bad troll's
that was posted in the kill file.

Thier flames are going un noticed and resulting in better qualtiy

There's a difference between good, useful information and useless
information. Comparing things like a computer or a car, where
everything is identical, is fine - there will still be regional
variations, but relatively small. It just doesn't work that way in
construction. The labor and material prices vary so widely from place
to place, even in the same state, that the numbers become pretty much
meaningless to someone from a different area.
