Default How to patch a hole on the ceiling wood panel?

We have a sunroom that we decided to insulate the attic in order to
minimize the wasted heat and the cold draft coming into the kitchen
(which is adjacent to the sunroom). Problem is, DH poked a hole in the
ceiling wood panel, then used the hammer claw to yank the panel off the
ceiling so we can have access. Insulation is done, and now we have
this hole staring right down at us.

Short of replacing this section of plywood, is there another way of
covering up the hole? The hole is about 4" x 5".

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Sounds like you can patch it. You need to cut a patch piece from same
thickness plywood, slightly bigger than the hole.

Then trace the outline of this patch over the hole and cut a matching
hole in the ceiling. This patch should fit very snugly into the hole
(make it a little snug and use sandpaper to make it perfect).

To hold it into the ceiling, you have to put some "wings" on it. Take
a couple of thin boards (like heavy duty paint sticks) and glue to the
back of the patch. The ends should extend a few inches outside of the
patch.

Now this piece will sit right in the hole, with the wings holding it in
(and possibly the insulation adding pressure). You can either leave it
like this, glue it in or attach with some screws (through the wings)

A patch will always look like a patch.

The smoke detector on a finished block is not a bad idea.

Perhaps you could make or buy a medallion type piece large enough
to cover the hole. Place several in a pattern and declare it
intentional accenting.

There are metal and plastic access panels that could be installed
to at least give it a finish look.

If it's near a wall, consider covering it with a cheap stamped metal
louvered heat register cover painted to blend in with the ceiling finish.

They come in all sorts of sizes and only you will know it's not real.

Widen the hole until one of the chrome rings that fits on a stove
just fits, then get a stuffed animal toy, (A ferret or monkey by
preference) and put it up there with just it's head sticking out.
