Easy-clean showers and sliding glass doors
Are there any recommendations for sliding glass shower enclosure doors that
have tracks that are easy to clean? It is is a tedious and time-consuming task to clean the deep and near inaccessible tracks in the shower doors the builder installed. I'm ready to rip out the tile shower enclosure and the sliding doors and replace them with something smooth and easy to keep clean. The grout on the shower floor is discolored and some of the caulking in the shower is peeling off after less than 2 years. It doesn't seem like tile and grout is practical in a shower. |

Why not lose the doors and put up a traditional shower curtain? IMHO, much easier to keep clean than a door unit, and cheap to replace if it does get too grungy. Or, if there's room (i.e., this is more of a walk-in shower), then a free-swinging glass door is relatively easy to clean (tends to get hard water stains, 'tho, and costs significant $$$). Sounds like the builder used too light of a grout in the shower. You're always going to have some mineral buildup in a shower, and a good design takes that into account. Sounds like the caulking is acrylic -- 2 years is about right. Easy to re-do, 'tho. Silicone tends to last a lot longer, but it's a booger to get off when it's time to re-do. BTW, pretty much any shower enclosure is going to have some sort of caulking, unless it's a single-piece unit that basically has to have the house built around it. |
