Is it safe to refill a kerosene heater while it's on/burning? I would
suspect that it's not a wise idea, especially since the directions say
not to do it. My dad says it's perfectly safe to refill it while it's
burning. Does anyone here refill theirs while it's burning?

My dad does do this all the time which is why I'm asking how safe or
how stupid it is? I know that some instructions on things say to never
do certain things for whatever reasons when alot of times it's
actually perfectly ok/safe to do those things. For example, the car cd
player says not to play CDRs in it. But it's perfectly ok to play them
in it, nothing's going to blow up. I'm just wondering if the kerosene
heater instructions say not to refill while burning just as a
precautionary. It also says to take the heater outside to refill it,
but I've never met anyone who does that.

You can choose your friends, but not your relatives. Mike, if you've
never met anyone who takes their heater outside to fill it you are
meeting the wrong people. If you have a head, use it for something
other than listening to CDs'.
Some people can learn from others that the stovetop is hot. Others have
to put their hand on it.

Doing what he is doing certainly increases the probability of something
going wrong. There was just a house fire a few towns over where the fire was
started by someone refilling a heater inside while it was burning.

Substituting different media in a CD player generally does not involve life
safety. Handling fuels around a burning indoor appliance does.

It's just plain stupid.
In the 50's I saw people prove to me that they could put a cigarette
out in a can of gasoline. Another time I saw a man hoiribly burned when
he poured gas on his leaf fire. I don't have to try these things myself
or ask a newsgroup whether it's safe or not. I'm beginning to doubt the
sincerity of the original post.

chances are if there is a warning not to do it it has already been done
by someone and it resulted in a serious fire / injury.

I would encourage you to refill a burning kerosene heater in your house.
Chances are that it won't immediately cause a fire...but when it does,
your insurance isn't worth a penny.

And if you like the smell of raw kerosene fumes in your house, you
should definately enjoy the results of any mistakes you will make.

I would say it depends on the type of heater. I know the
old style would be downright dangerous, if not impossible,
to refill while lit, but the newer models with a fuel
"cartridge" that can be removed and a small resevoir of
kerosene at the bottom that keeps the heater going while
you take the tank outside to refill is not so scary.
I had one of those. It said don't do it, but it was
clearly designed for that purpose. I took the warning
in the same vein as the one on the side of the Q-tip
box that says not to put them in your ears.

If you have ever seen a kerosene heater catch a fire while being filled. You
would not be asking this question here at all. If you do , do it , be ready to
run and do drop the fill jug your using if it flames up. If you feel luck keep
doing it.
