What's a "tear-off" roof?

Never heard of it. Did a google search, but all hits seem to be saying
that a tear-off roof is little more than tar paper.

Also, can anyone point me to a good illustration of how ice barriers
work?

TIA

The only time I've heard the term is in the context of a replacement job. A
tearoff means removing the shingles and the underlying felt, repairing any
underlayment and buliding the roof back up.

This means the old roof must come off before new roof can be installed .Term
often in reference to flat roof(hot-mop tar) or composition
shingles-typically 3 layers of composition may be applied before a tear-off
and re-roof.

Thanks, that's very clear. I take it that a new tear-off roof would be a
pretty good selling point on an existing home, since the roof could be
rebuilt instead of replaced, is that right?
