replacing wood shingles with steel roof
Hi, I am located in Northern California and I am going to replace
my wood shingle roof. I talked to Cal-pac about their steel roof. They recommended putting the new steel roof on top of my old wood shingles roof, saying it can provide an extra layer of insulation and the price will be a bit lower. Anyone know if that a good idea? Also the price they quoted (with new gutters) for a 2000+ sq feet is around 19k. Is that a right price? Please give me some suggestions. Thanks Wilson |

Thanks If you are spending that kind of cash, strip the roof and do it right. As long as a metal roof lasts, this could be the last chance in your lifetime to inspect the decking and repair any soft spots. If you want insulation as part of job, they can put down rigid under the metal panels. aem sends.... |

Thanks Wilson Seems like you'd have the possibility of the existing roof serving as a buffet for insects. Does the steel roof provide any insulation? Not that could be measured. And IMHO any insulation provided by shingle would also be miniscule. Remove the shingle and do the job right. The installers for sure will thank you for it. Harry K |
