Rust Stains from Frigidaire Gallery
My laundry occasionally has strange rust stains on it when it comes
out of that washer. As far as I can tell, it only happens when I wash my collared shirts, and when it happens at least one of them will have a stain on one of the tips of its collar. The stains all look as if they are prints from the stained tip, triangular, with two solid edges. I figure the collar tip is poking into some recess in the washer that ordinary laundry doesn't reach, but what? It's very annoying to have to go over my load of shirts to look for the stains, treat them, and run them through again. I haven't really had this washer for all that long. I love the idea of a front loading stackable washer, but this one has been one repair after another. Most of the time it's that stupid door latch. I've replaced it five times, now. There's a kit to rebuild it completely, but that's $150, as opposed to $5 for the plastic hook that keeps breaking. And now the cycle knob has come off. I don't know what's going to break next, and don't really feel like calling a repair man to take it apart to look for the rust. Does anyone know of a quick fix for this, besides buying a new washer? -- Helge Moulding Just another guy http://hmoulding.cjb.net/ with a weird name |

I figure the collar tip is poking into some recess in the washer that ordinary laundry doesn't reach, but what? Are you sure it's happening in the washer and not the dryer? That complaint sounds more like what happens when the front dryer drum supports wear and allow clothing to get caught between the drum and the dryer's front panel. If you're sure it's from the washer and it is actually "rust", I would have to assume the clothing is getting caught against some metal. Depending on the *exact* model and design of washer you have, there might not be too much metal in close proximity to the clothing which could cause it. Getting caught under the agitator is one possibility on top load models, even models with a plastic inner tub. BTW. You can find tips for locating the model and serial number tag on your appliances in the 'Repair Parts' section of my site linked below. Are you sure it's happening in the washer and not the dryer? Yup. I check my shirts when I move them from the washer to the dryer so I can spot treat and re-wash stained shirts. It could be something (coin, chain, etc.) caught beneath one of the tub vains and rusting and clothes are able to rub against it. Other then that I don't know where it could be coming from as the tub is stainless steel and the rest rubber/plastic although if the rear tub seal was leaking and water got into the tub bearing, they can produce a brownish 'mud' (for lack of a better word) as they deteriorate. The mud produced usually stains the rear of the outer tub but it might be possible some has gotten inside. It may need to be disassembled to check for such a condition if items rusting inside the tub are not found to be the cause. Sounds like I'll want to check for something stuck in the washer. I sure hope it's as simple as that. -- Helge Moulding Just another guy http://hmoulding.cjb.net/ with a weird name |
