Default Lawnmower Maintenance Questions

If you buy cheap murry/mtd push mowers and dont do you own maintenace
it might just be cheaper to buy a new one every 3 years.

I find that hard to believe. My maintenance consists mainly of an oil
change and air filter cleaning and it takes less than 30 minutes and
costs less than $5. If you can buy a new mower every 3 years for only
$15 incremental, then I guess this is cheaper. I don't think you can
sell a three year old mower for only $15 less than what you will pay for
the new one.

I don't know... new mower 99 bucks. annual maintenance of 30 minutes plus
oil, air filter and sparkplug and effort vs. a new mower every three
years... plus you deduct the mower for 99 bucks on your taxes when donated
to charity (where they will change the oil and sparkplug, airfilter etc.).
It's not hard to justify buying a new mower instead of just buying a new
one. (if you are buying cheap mowers that is)

I don't question that it can be justified .... based on laziness. I
don't think it can be justified economically. Last I knew you could
only deduct the FMV of a donated item, not the new cost. The FMV of a
three-year old, $99 mower that has had no maintenance is probably about
$25. Even if you are in the 38.6% tax bracket, that saves you about
$9.65. So, the $99 mower has cost you $99 - 9.65 = 89.35 for three
years or $29.78/year. I'll invest 30 minutes of my time to save $25
(after deducting the cost of parts) tax-free. That is worth close to
$40 before tax for many of us which is about $80/hour. I'll work for
that wage!
