Default Cant find windows to fit my existing openings

My 1965 built house has old windows in some of the rooms. They are the old aluminum ones and the
last owner installed a vinyl window on the outside. I hear every noise outside from dogs barking to
people having low conversations. I want to replace these windows with new double hung windows. I am
having a problem with the sizes. I measured the windows from end to end on the inside of the house..

Bedroom window 1 45 7/8" (W) x 39 78" (H)
Bedroom window 2 33 7/8" (W) x 39 78" (H)
Kitchen windows 33 7/8" (W) x 39 78" (H)

Are these odd sizes. I do not see them anywhere at Home Depot of Lowes. There are hundreds and
hundreds of houses in my area with the same house and same windows. Was this a popular size back
then? Do they stop making mass produced windows as the years go on? If so, do I have to buy
different sized windows and make the rough openings larger? I really do not want to do that. I want
to get out of this house ASAP but it wont be for a while so I just need to get these windows. I hava
a 11 mo old baby and I am tired of the neighbors dogs waking him up. When I close the windows I
have now, the noise level barely drops one drop.

Thanks

Tony

You could have replacement windows made to fit your openings.

http://www.andersenwindows.com/servl...-your-home.htm

or vinyl from any number of makers.

You won't likely find anything at the big stores. Call a window guy
or several, they can have custom windows done and the price is similar
to what you'd buy off the shelf.

Make sure you and the person taking the order understand
what your ordering. Some windows go buy opening size
and some go by actual size. This size is escentialy
the same but it will NOT FIT. You need 1/4 inch gap all around.
Also depends on mounting style. Sometimes you
almost have to take out most of the window before you
can calculate what size to order. Once you do that most of
the remaining windows will normally be of similar size.

Contractor can charge the window price plus $100-400
for each installed.

It took me about 4-5 hours labor on each window I installed,
not including figuring. I still have trim work left.

A long time ago in the old house, my father was approached by
a Sears rep to install windows. What should have costed well under $5000,
he was estimating something like $20,000. Crooks. That was in the early 80's
when energy efficient windows started to become popular.

Get a hold of a book called "Your Engineered House" by Rex Roberts.
Great ideas on windows. It is out of print but worth finding.
Great way to affordable windows. too.
Good luck.
