You can easily buy a used single-wide manufactured home
in that price range. You likely will not get land included
with that price, so there would still be a park rental.
If you are really motivated to live cheap, you can pick
up a lot for under $1000 at some of the land developments
across that US that have gone belly up. Buy an older
single-wide, and you can have your own place free and
clear in that price range.

You can also buy a house at a tax sale for that price. Just make
certain you're familiar with the use of firearms and don't mind the
sound of small arms fire at any and all hours of the night.

look for a depressed area with no jobs, closed mills, closed
manufacturing. of course, that means you won't have one there
either. and it will probably be an old place.

Plenty of them here in southeast Nebraska. Small towns surrounded by corn
fields. I moved here 5 years ago from southern California and never looked
back...

There are numerous houses in northern Ohio in that price range. They tend
to be small and of wood-frame construction built in the 1940s and 50s and
are therefore outdated by today's standards; but taxes, urban ammenities and
travel times to services are usually good. Some are in small towns or rural
areas. There, the houses may also be on a relatively large piece of land.

Look into urban homesteading too. Some cities discount properties (and,
sometimes, property taxes too) to owners who put in "sweat equity" to
repair/improve deteriorated properties. In such situations, don't expect
good schools or classy neighborhoods; but look carefully and you'll find
neighborhoods on the way up with enthusiastic residents, thriving community
institutions and an improving quality of life.
