DIYbanter - Sony Triniton pincushin problem

The pin amp output device (transistor in most monitors), or some capacitors
have become defective. This is common with the age of these monitors.
Sometimes the deflection yoke can become defective, but this is rare.

The failure was going to happen anyways due to the age and the amount of
usage hours on the monitor. To service your monitor, the tech would have to
troubleshoot it to find the exact defective parts. This may not be worth it,
unless you are set up to do this type of work yourself. The parts are
probably not very expensive, as long as it is not the deflection yoke, which
is usually not the cause.

The best protection for your computer equipment, or any device is a UPS. It
is a small investment in comparison to a descent computer. Make sure that
the power rating of the UPS is at least more than double of that of the
total load you plan to put on it. If you have a laser printer, you must use
a UPS that is rated for a laser printer.

I have a pincushion problem with my Sony 500ps monitor. I had a power
surge and when I rebooted I have pronounced pincushion and can only correct
it by adjusting to "0" in the adjustments, and I still have some
distortion. When I attempt to play a game it reverts to a lesser
resolution and the error magnifies. This happened once before and a few
weeks later the problem corrected itself so I have hopes however unfounded
that it is correctable. Other than the obvious suggestion to buy a UPS for
the future, does anyone have a suggestion as to what the problem might be?
I found on reference to bad "caps" but I am not very bright and don't have
a clue what that means.
