A neighbor's Fisher 'Studio 24' disc player reports a M-Error in the display
after some usage, then refuses to continue playing.

What kind of problem has developed here; how much repair will it take?

m-error is a mechanical failure..
Usually it was a small clutch that the plastic broke.
The unit has two . one is part of the front loading and the other is
loading the disc from the carousel to the cd mech .
Its been 5 years since I work on one, Not a fun job.
I don't know even if the part is still available.

I don't know if we're talking about similar players here but my Yamaha 3
disc changer recently broke (door problem) and I was able to fix it myself.

The cd door is supposed to sit in a groove so the the cogs can drive it in
and out. However in mine it sat not in the correct groove but an adjacent
unused one. Hence "MECH " on the display.

I eventually got it out and re-placed the door and now it works fine. You
would need a decent set of small and medium screw drivers.

At a guess it would be a 1-2 hour job for a professional ( Me - 5 nights).
Hard to know if your problem is similar of course but it might be worth a
try to try and save up to $100

It is a big job, but the part is available. I get them from MCM.

Expect a repair tab over 100.00 .

Ive worked on about 3 different units of that model and they all seem
to have the same problem. There is a slip clutch that is involved in
the loading of the CD into the play deck at the rear of the unit. When
it fails and you get the error message you can get it to load the CD
anyway by wiggling the carousel tray back and forth gently while it is
attempting to load the disk. It will go ahead and load and play the
disk but you may have the same problem all over again when it tries to
load the next disk. If anyone can tell me the part number for that
small slip clutch gear I would appreciate it. You see, I have one of
those sitting in my living room and it will fail from time to time. It
seems to be worse after the unit has warmed up a bit. I guess the
grease in the slip clutch gets less viscuos when it warms a bit. Good

The Sanyo/Fisher part number is 614 253 9071. At our shop we get them
from Pacific Coast Parts.

The repair for the Fisher 24 CD Juke Box is a lot more difficult and thus
more expensive to fix than for your Yahama 3 disc changer. Not only is it
a different part (than with your Yamaha) but to get to it in the Fisher is a
big teardown and reassembly job.
The problem is not a slip-clutch/grease problem but rather a gear that has a
piece that has broken off and therefore will not engage to load the disc
into the spindle/laser assembly.... very common problem with this design....
also was marketed under Radio Shacks Optimus brand. Otherwise this is a
fairly reliable mechanism. The repair price of $100 or MORE sounds
completely correct.
