Default Help with discoloration on TV

I just got a 27" JVC TV from an uncle who got a High-Def.

When I hooked the TV up in my room, I noticed that the left and right sides
of the screen (close to the edges) would change color whenever a light color
was on screen.

I put in a DVD that had a shot of a white wall, and the left side turned
yellow, and the right side turned purple.

The TV was only made in 2000, and I've tried RF, RCA and S-Video connections
and they all produce the same results.

I asked my uncle and he said it happened once in a while, but he didn't
really notice it.

Is there any way I can fix this? Thanks.

Resolder the degauss thermistor. Should be good as new.

Thanks for your reply. Can you let me know exactly where the thermistor is
located?

From the description, it sounds like doming of the shadow mask. There
is a possibility that the purity settings on the tube are off a little
bit, but some crts are more prone to doming than others.

Try turning down the contrast and brightness a bit to see if it slows
down the discoloration effects.

Try the simple stuff first... Are there any speakers near it (other than
the Home Theater shielded-type center channel units)? If so, remove them,
allow the set to remain off a few hours, and turn on again to activate
degaussing, and see if prob. goes away. Next question - Was the set ever
dropped onto its face or hit hard in the front? If it was this way from
new, and your uncle simply 'lived with it" instead of requesting service, it
may have been damaged during shipment. Internal to the picture tube ia a
metal screen called a "shadow mask" that can become bent under physical
punishment, and it will result in color impurities on the screen.

The degauss thermoresistor may need to be re-soldered, or replaced. If
required, parts are available from any of the JVC authorized parts
distributors, or you may be able to get a generic replacement from most any
of the electronic parts suppliers. A defective thermoresistor is a common
cause for this.

The CRT may have been damaged from the set being rough handled, or banged
during transport, or the mask in the CRT went defective on its own. I have
seen CRT's go defective like this.

There may be a magnetic field of some type that is too close to the TV set,
such as from speakers, or something electrical. This does not exclude
something like a major appliance or heating system behind the wall in the
next room.

You should let someone from a TV service centre look at this for you, rather
than go in to the set itself. Even after the set is unplugged it may not be
safe to work on, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

If you can't find it on your own, you may want to have someone experienced
work on it. A TV is really not the best place to learn repair.
