Testing used PC monitors ?

I see lots of monitors for sale real cheap at garge sales and there's
usually something wrong with them so apying more than a dollar is usually a
waste of time. I wonder if anyone has figured out a way top loop back any
connections on the video plug that might give one some idea if the thing
works?
tnx
Hank

I built a little generator that puts out color bars at 1024x768 or
1280x1024. Anything lower resolution ain't worth carting home anyway.
Just a PIC and not much else. Stuck the whole thing in a mouse. Saved
me a lot of "monitor
disposal hassles." Even if it's free, it ain't free...
Don't forget to take along a power cord. It's amazing how many people
at garage sales just don't have a power cord you can use to turn it on.

That sounds handy, do you offer the code to the public? With that and a few
notes as to what I/O pin is used for what I could make one for myself.

There are pocket size test generators for computer monitors. Some of
these models will supply both grating and color bar test patterns in
order to allow for proper adjustmens.

This type of test generator can also be used to test monitors while out
shopping for one.

Most of the ones that I have seen at the gagage sales, are usualy not
very good, and that is why they are being sold at a garage sale in the
first place.

Henry,
I have one of these testers. They are cheap, small and will run off of a 9V
battery. I bought mine from Anatek a few years ago but they don't seem to be
around any more. This place also has the same unit or do a google search on
"VGA tester".

There is a reference to Anatek in the "ESR II Meter; US Source?" thread.

The web site www.anatekcorp.com is given as the URL.

Neat but kind of pricey. I see about one a week and I guess dragging a
laptop out is the cheapest.
