JBL Amplifier repair
Hi all,
Could anyone point me in the right direction? I am looking for JBL S64AMI and/or S53AMI power amplifier for 12" JBL PB12 subwoofer. These amps die after ~1 year of use and I'd be interested in finding a supplier for them... If not, then I'll just repair mine, but it would be nice to know if such supplier exists. Thanks! Please e-mail: viperz (at) mail (dot) com |

The only source that I know of is Harman(JBL). The S64 is currently out of
stock, but they are expecting more. The S53 is in stock. We have many of the Infinity subs in the field with the S53 modules and have replaced exactly one, in a unit that was blown up by lightning. Most of the problems that we have seen have been C6 failures, not bad modules. What makes you say that they die after a year of use? If the module is bad, it is an expensive part. How have you determined that this is the problem? Leonard Caillouet "Eugen T" wrote in message news Hi all, Could anyone point me in the right direction? JBL Amplifier repair
Hi Leonard,
Actually, looks like I was wrong. I just saw a message in this newsgroup describing the same symptoms as mine in the same subwoofer. Anyway, I opened the sub and the schematic of actual amp is different from the one that I have in the manual. Instead of S64 I have 3 FET transistors with thermister sitting on large heatsink. All 3 transistors are dead (I don't know what happened to this amp), plus one of the diodes is also dead. That's all what I have found so far. Is there any place where I can get repair manual for mine? On the PCB it says "Revision C", but revisions of design in the manual have versions in numbers, not letters. Also, could you be more specific why that specific capacitor (C6) fails? I went to Harmanaudio.com website today and it does not show that they have any parts for PB12. Eugen. Actually, checking I find that the c6 failures are not in this model. There
are, however, several service bulletins on this unit. The site you went to does not have service parts, only accessories and manuals and consumer replaceable parts. The service site has all parts listed and most should be available, but you have to be a servicer to have access. Contact Harman Consumer Group at 516-496-3400. They may sell you a service manual. They might refer you to a service center. Leonard Caillouet "Eugen T" wrote in message .. . Hi Leonard, Actually, looks like I was wrong. JBL Amplifier repair
Little update:
My sub was made in Dec.2002 (yeah, and this expensive beast is already dead), so service manual is old compared to the sub. JBL dropped IC-based power amp idea and moved onto FET-based power amp... Hopefully, I will be able to locate newer service manual now "Leonard Caillouet" wrote in message news:LVZlb.100128$AH4.79172@lakeread06... If it was made in Dec. 2002 it has to be under warranty. Why are you
messing with fixing it yourself? The electronics have a 1 year warranty. I got mine from liquidators, so I don't think I have any warranty on this

It's so weird. I asked Harman if they had latest service manual and person
from parts department was really kind to send me a short version of service manual for free, but... it's the same manual that I have! I mean S64AMI is in this manual too "Leonard G. Note to group:
I just found out Friday that the S64AMI and S53AMI output modules are discontinued after all. JBL is making accomodation deals to customers on another model sub. *******s. Mark Z. "Leonard G.
