For the second time in three years, Vancouver police are warning the
public about convicted sex-offender James Leo Gracie, who is being
released from prison.

The 50-year-old pedophile is one of three sex offenders Vancouver police
warned the public about on Friday.

Sgt. Glenn Thordarson, who is in charge of the department's high-risk
offenders unit, said it was just coincidence that all three were being
released at once.

Thordarson said assessments on all three men indicate they pose a risk
to the public. The other two are Mervin Lynn Walkus, 32, and Joseph Neil
Johnny, 37.

Gracie and Johnny are now living in a federal halfway house in
Vancouver, while Walkus is living in a private residence in the city.

Gracie is a tall white man distinguished by tattoos of a rattlesnake and
"Slim Jim" on his right forearm and a heart with leaves on his left. He
was convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in Edmonton in
1997 and a seven-year-old girl in Calgary in 1998.

At the time of his sentencing in Edmonton in 1999, a judge had stern
words for Gracie and noted that if the sentence was harsh, it was
because "someone has to protect our children.''

After seven years behind bars, Gracie was released in 2007 on a 10-year
supervision order and was sent to live at a federal halfway house in
Vancouver. Last year, he was caught breaching his supervision order and
was sentenced in Prince George Provincial Court to another 14 months.

Johnny is aboriginal, about five-foot-six and 133 pounds with black
hair, brown eyes and scar on his forehead. Police say he has several
sex-related convictions involving male and female victims ranging in age
from five to 89.

Walkus has a lengthy record for sexual assault, break-and-enter and
breach of probation. He is native, five-foot-one and 150 pounds, with
black hair and brown eyes.
