KSDK -- A registered sex offender is charged with burglarizing a car in
Fairview Heights, Illinois.

On June 7 around 12:48 a.m., police were called to the 500 block of St.
Clair Road to investigate a disturbance call. When they arrived,
officers found that a vehicle there had been burglarized and two
teenaged witnesses had captured the suspect.

The two young men, 17 and 19 years old, live in the area where the
burglary happened. They told officers that they had seen the suspect,
identified as John Smith of Fairview Heights, acting suspiciously while
walking away from the driveway where the vehicle was parked.

The witnesses said when they confronted Smith, he threw a stolen purse
at them. Then they claim he attacked them, striking one of them before
they fought back, forcing him to the ground.

Smith was taken to St. Louis University Hospital where he was treated
for head injuries.

During the investigation, police learned Smith is a registered child sex
offender and was on parole at the time of the crime. His parole has been
revoked and he is presently in the custody of the Illinois Department of
Corrections.

The Fairview Heights Police Department will be presenting the Burglary
case to the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office for charges.
