If there is no menu selection available on the front panel controls of the
set, your only alternative is to invest in to buying the original factory
remote.

I thought so too. I had an old VCR I was using for a tuner, but needed
to program channels when I got cable. It wasn't worth buying a new
remote. Fortunately I found an program for Palm OS (OmniRemote?).
There's an online library which has the complete codes for my unit
available for free download.

In fact, this is a good resource for anybody who services gear. If the
codes you need aren't included in the original download (many are),
there are supplemental code libraries, or you can request that someone
copy them from an OEM remote (learn mode) and upload. For one-time
programming, you can download the an evaluation copy which will do the
job for free.

Some Palm handhelds have sufficient IR power to completely replace a
normal remote. My old M-130 (have two) is one such, and it's available
on eBay for much, much less than a programmable remote with comparable
capabilities. Leave it in a charging base...no more buying AAA's for
the normal plethora of remotes.

OTOH, my Palm smartphone won't transmit more than five feet or so. I
solved that by placing a PowerMid unit near my customary
listening/watching position.
