Default Troubleshooting Problem with Erratic LCD Backlight

The backlight on my 17 inch computer monitor did not light when I
booted my computer. However, I switched it off, then on again and it
lighted for a moment; then it flickered and faded off again. I
repeatedly switched the monitor off and on with the same result until
it finally stayed on. Same problem, same fix the next day.

What is wrong with this monitor? Is it the lamp or a capacitor,
transformer, or something else? Is it worth fixing
DIY? I thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge & experience.

It would help if you told us the make and model of the monitor!!!
Also, what happens if you use the monitor with a different computer?

Default Troubleshooting Problem with Erratic LCD Backlight

Samsung SyncMaster 171V

I have check all the [external] connectors/connections.

One I get it stay on, there's no problem... unless I try to use a
screen saver (blank) or allow it to go into standby or hibernation (or
shut it down).
