The roof shingle panels offered by ECD Ovonics are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Of course if oil goes through the roof the economics change. Who knows? John The cost is somewhere around $100 per watt, does that sound affordable in any household context? |

The only advantage to shingle panels is that they generate electricity directly. The heating tubes developed for GPS satellites are far more effiecent at generating heat and take up a lot less space. A properly set up system will even heat your home on a moonlit night. No solar system is without maintainance. It needs to be cleaned, checked for leaks, protected from impact damage etc. The path to the sun must be clear at all times which may mean triming trees. Another problem is that they generate low voltage DC. So either you figure out how to run your home on low voltage DC, have two seperate systems, or lose power converting commercial electrictiy down or solar up to your power line standards.
