Make 5v from 12v DC?

Any transistor that will do this?

There's lots of 5 volt regulator IC's that will do this - depends on your
requirements. Current / power ratings, physical mounting considerations,
how critical the application, etc.

A bipolar transistor can do it with a 5.6 volt zener diode referencing the
base junction.

Try Googling "series regulator circuits".

What's your application? it all comes down to how much current and
regulation you need. Maybe a three terminal reg like a LM78XX
series might work.
