Lets go south of Hwy 50 then where there are no houses, in case we screw up". Luckily my wife did not overhear that. But there should be a legal limit as to how much of the loot the lawyers get to keep. Also, the part that seems to be missing but places a huge damper on the more frivolous kind of suits in places like Germany: If someone files an iffy lawsuit and loses he or she is obligated to pay any and all expenses of the other party. Including travel expenses and work time (and that can really add up). Sure, there still are folks who try that kind of stuff over there. Once. As far as regulatory hurdles -- well, yes. But I bet you don't want a copper mine to get established right upstream from you that's free to dump arsenic in the stream water and the air you breath, either. Sure there needs to be common sense and punishment for gross endangerment and negligence. I have quite exhaustive liability waivers in my consulting agreements without which I won't take a client. However, that does not protect against gross and blatantly obvious negligence. And it shouldn't. California does seem to have an extra special way of adding regulatory hurdles, but I shouldn't talk given that Oregon isn't all that far behind. They throw real rocks into the machinery at times. When I ran a division of our company we had 10-hour shifts because some people like that. Especially Asians. They somehow have a greater sense of family responsibilities than many others so they try their utmost not to put grandma into a nursing home. If they can rotate 4-day weeks so that one is always home that works and we tried to accommodate this. Then, out of the blue, body politicus changed the rules where anything above 8 hours a day required 1.5x overtime pay. You could only go to 10 hours if all emloyees wanted that but we couldn't possibly do that to, for example, single moms. Kablouie. We were forced to go back to 8-hour shifts. I had people in my office crying. When our roofer told me that he had to lay off 100% of his staff because workers comp rates would otherwise put him out of biz it made me sad. He did our metal roof all alone. Took four weeks. His back will definitely be shot before he cane ever retire. -- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com |

Good feeling of comfort... you could see the ground most of the time ;-) Oh, nothing against the DC-3. It's a mighty fine airplane. My first commercial flight was a long-haul. Across the ocean in a DC-8. Capitol Airways. Here it is: http://www.airplane-pictures.net/image2124.html http://www.airplane-pictures.net/image2124.html The best flight of all was in a Boeing Stearman. Open cockpit, leather cap, goggles and my T-shirt was slowly being decorated with oil splatters. Initially the pilot asked me whether I'd be squirmish about aerobatics. "Nope". "Great. Lets go south of Hwy 50 then where there are no houses, in case we screw up". Luckily my wife did not overhear that. Best of all, the pilot let me have the plane for a while, just before turning final on landing. It was actually this one: http://images.thewavemag.com/images/...4000/13410.jpg Nice. The only time I've ever got close to motion sickness was after an hour in a Cessna Aerobat. A tech who worked for me was an aerobatics instructor and took me for a ride. He did vertical stalls, loops, snap rolls, barrel rolls, all that stuff. We stole a bunch of really cheap toilet paper from work... toss it out, let it unfurl, and see how many times you can slice it in half before it hits the water. *Then* he took me to lunch! John |

Exorbitant import tariffs and so on. A socialistic trend ain't my cuppa tea. Small business is the foundation of innovation and a region's well-being and I expect politicians to understand that ;-) So I should add to the list: Good biz climate, conservative gvt. -- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com |

Wait until you see what the Democrats are going to do ;-) I sure hope they don't engage in protectionism. That never really works. We electronics guys are blessed with lots of domestic manufacturers but during a recent laser project I came to realize how much specialty stuff we have to buy overseas. Not for cost reasons, we really didn't have much of a choice. It gets really old when, like it seems at times in AUS, there are high tariffs but there is no industry left to be "protected" anymore. -- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com |
