Compression yes, but I have experienced the odd failure when using
13mm fittings on 12.7mm (1/2") pipe.

I'm not sure which pipes you are talking about. Half inch pipe isn't 12.7mm.
The 'half-inch' refers to the nominal bore, so that the OD is larger than
this - and very close to that of 15mm (not 13mm) pipe.
