My question is basically this. Based on
the horror stories I've seen here and
elsewhere is there any real point in
considering a manufactured home?
There are two types of manufactured homes in the US:
The typical "trailer" type (Note that these come in single, double and triple
wide flavors), and the other is factory built and assembled on site housing.
RUN, do not walk away from the trailer type. You will be spending your money on
a rapidly depreciating asset that has no hope of any resale value in the future,
subjects you to renting a lot (in most situations) with ever increasing rents,
and assorted other horrors.
Now, manufactured (sometimes known as modular) housing is another story. If you
deal with a quality manufacturer (who is usually the installer), you can come
very close to all the benefits of a traditionally built house, and frequently
get higher quality and more features from the typical starter home.
