more serious:
- did you connect /MCLR and +5V?
- if working on XP: did you select 'windows calls'?

This is about the most simple programmer I have ever seen, and
probably the most unreliable too. If your time is worth any money
forget all serial-port bit-fiddeling programmers and go for a serious
one, like: Wisp628 (mine), most kitsrus/DIY proggers, Warp-X, ICD2 or
a clone, etc
