I rather think it does no such thing.

What they do is introduce a fixed resistance into the load to keep the
impedance from dropping too low. It is a common misconception among
salespeople, reps, and consumers that they maintain a constant impedance.
There is a slight drop in output when the "protection" is introduced. The
bottom line is that these units can work quite well but they can also allow
impedances at the amplifier to go too low for some amps to reliably drive.
