I still see the odd one of these. Most of the time they're just about worth
doing, but occasionally, they do get some pig faults on them that defy being
worth the time to pin down. If the laser itself is faulty, they're cheap
enough and easy enough to replace. Looks like you're in the UK so try
Grandata in Wembley ( they have a website ) for a replacement. No account
needed, you can just deal with them by phone and credit card. Have you tried
cleaning the laser ? ( properly I mean, with a cotton bud and IPA, not a
cleaning disc ). This model will often have a dirty laser, which will
respond, if not long term, then at least enough to prove the point, to a
proper clean.

Another common problem, depending on exactly which CD processor board is
fitted to the underside of the deck, is the 47uF sm caps. If it's the
version of the board with three of these along one edge, they are very
common to be faulty. They must only be replaced with similar surface mount
types. Standard wire ended electrolytics just don't perform correctly in
these positions. You don't indicate how experienced you are at audio service
work. If the caps have failed, it's usually by one or more of them leaking.
Depending on how long the problem has been left unattended, there will often
be damage to nearby pcb vias. These are repairable by patch -around
techniques using thin etch revision wire, but it's a tricky job if you're
not experienced at working out your patch connection points.

You don't say exactly what the problem is with the tape, but in general,
they are pretty straightforward decks, if not terribly easy to work on.
